Since everybody seems to get quite a kick out of guessing what these things are, I have one for the collective muskie intelligence out there. I have no idea what it is (other than a bad custom paint job); I got it in a batch of used baits that I got locally. I would have liked to seen the original paint. It's about 10" long and the tail is made of what appears to be thin leather. It seems reasonable well constructed, but what do I know, I live in the land of trout. Hope the pics upload...

Riverman,
I've personally never thrown it. The pics acutally make the paint job look BETTER thanit really is!
It's much bigger than the baits I've been successful w/ out here, so it's mainly relegated to hanging from a peg in the basement. I just kinda wanted to know what it was.

There was a lure that was very similar to that (or that is the same one) made around Appleton here. I had seen it at the shop here in town. If it is the same maker, he sold his lip making die and press to Pete (owner of the shop here).

I gotta give credit to Jonesi, this guy knows his lures...he's always the first one with the right call.

Ferd, I have one of those as well. That's the name I was looking for. They are really light (pine, or balsa maybe) and the paint didn't stay on too well, but it is a cool looking bait. I'll have to find mine, and see what it says. I think the name is on the bottom of the bait. It is a tan, sucker looking color.

I remember him at the Rosemont Show for quite a few years. He called it the Sick Sucker. He had the small metal pool with about 10 things rigged up. Sorta like the Space Bobber nowadays... I've got a few of his smaller baits and have caught a few and I have a Sick Sucker also, but it's zeroed for me for quite a few years.

For years, the manufacturer was directly across the aisle from our Muskies Inc. booth at the Journal/Sentinel Sports Show in Milwaukee, at the old Arena venue. The owner had a cattle water tank filled with water, and a few baits on small poles with about 3' of line. He kept a bait moving in the tank all day long. They looked pretty good in the tank, but from all indications that I had heard, under fishing conditions, they didn't have near the action that they did in the tank. I haven't seen one anywhere for years.

Mark

If that thing is listed in your book as a mud puppy--then your book is wrong sorry to say. Jonesi hit it right on the head. I dont know if ratman used the small tank with the lure constantly moving all day, but I do know radtke minnows did that, and did have the darn thing in the tank ALL day at the shows. Look up Mud Puppy on ebay under fishing and you will see what they are.

Correct! It's a ratman lure. The companmy was located in Rose city, Michigan at on etime but has since folded, I believe. This bait looks similar to baits that were made by the very famous Bud Stewart, who was a lure and decoy maker from Michigan.
Mudpuppies are a much smaller top water bait.
