I was just at the blaine show and i bought an abu 5600ssc3 reel. I got it home and it worked fine . then I put it on the rod and now the button will not click back to engage the spool. I know this can happen if the spring is worn out, but this one is brand new out of the box. I was wondering if this is something that I can fix easily or should I just return it? I would really appreciate the help

Sometimes that spring breaks also I have had abu's with very little time on them have that spring break.
It usually breaks right at the first bend of the spring. What I usually do is take the very next bend of the spring and bend it straight and reattach it to the pin.

Just in case you don't have a large version of your schematic here's one.

Dave- Do you have an exploded schematic of the 6500 c3 that you could post? I printed the 5600 you provided.
Thanks a lot,
Don

Here are just about all of the ABU schematics. You need to check the bottom of your reel foot for a series of numbers and then match them up to the schematic for your reel. The reason you need to check the reel foot numbers is most ABU reels have gone through changes and if you don't have the correct schematic the parts may be different. The numbers you will need are the first four. I buy my parts from Outdoor World Reel Repair, which is part of Bass Pro Shops. You have to call them to get parts, but they make sure you get what you want (417-873-5274).

If it's a new reel, there's a good chance the clutch mechanism just got a little shipping grease on it! Clean it out, should be fine!

Check to make sure the drags not backed all the way off. If it's backed off far enough that the handle is turning and nothing else, the release button won't pop back up. The drag has to be tight enough to turn the spool.
