On the abu C4 everyone says the gears aren't tough enough. Does someone make the same ratio, but stronger? Or am I just dreaming? Thanks Doug

The gears ARE tough enough. I do not think that "everyone" says that either. The reel just has to be used correctly. The C4 has 6.3:1 gears and a lot of people think that this is necessary to burn bucktails. Keep the 5.3:1 gears of the C3 and put a power handle on it if you want some added speed. Also, keep the spool filled to capacity.

The teeth are so close together that the tolerance is extremely tight. It is easy to roll the teeth of the gears over by burning bucktails with the constant pressure from the bucktails. High speed gears are GREAT for jerk baits, glide baits and some top water. Picks up the slack faster without added pressure on the gears.

It is easy to tell if your high speed gears are going bad; if the reel is making a buzzing sound on the handle side, your gears are probably going. It is a very easy fix, but it requires the replacement of the main gear and pinion gear.

Thanks Chuck, I've got a C4, and I like it. Just thought I could upgrade it. Doug
