As I went to grease and oil my reels this weekend out of sheer boredom with winter I noticed a problem that cropped up with one of my reels late in the season. It seems that I have the line piling up on one side of the reel because the level wind is getting hung up. I am fairly certain this is a problem with the worm gear. What do you guys think?

More likely it the pahl. Part number 5176. It happens very regularly on reels that are use a lot. You can check it by taken one off another and placing it in the bad reel. If it then works you need to replace the pahl.

I have 2 reels, that I have oiled that, and it is okay for a bit, then a couple of days later, scream'n again??!! If that's the part, I can check farther, and get a new one if I need to. Great job on the info!!!!

Posts: 107 Location: milwaukee | Hi Chuck; You said "A drop or 2 of oil is all that is needed on any given part. Places to oil; post with cog wheel, worm gear (DO NOT GREASE), bearings, drive shaft post, brake blocks (if your reel has them) and the flange that the axle sits in on the side opposite the handle." I'm interested in your thinking behind oil vs. grease on the worm gear. I'd think the grease would hold up better since the worm is exposed to the outside on the Abus. I've been greasing mine (just a little) without problems.

esoxrookie, I'll jump in here for Chuck (trust me he will feel the same way). Grease will attract more dirt and grit than oil will as well as slowing down how quickly the pawl can move back and forth on the work gear.
