The post on Trolling Boards got me thinking about lures for trolling. I have never tried trolling before but since I have moved to the U.P. where trolling is legal, I am going to try it.

I am looking for some advice on lures for trolling? I am sure that it depends on what situations you are working.

I am primarily going to try trolling spinnerbaits over the early weeds and then troll the breaklines later in the season. My arsenal right now consists of bucher jointed depth raider, baby jointed depth raider, a cisco kid straight crank, a few stanley spinnerbaits, and a few baby shallow raiders.

Any recommendations on some other lusres I should try?

Some trolling baits that work well on LSC are Woodies, Artifacts, Wileys, Gotchas and Lokes. These are all wood baits and catch fish here.

Trolling lures that have worked for me:

1: Loke's, Wiley's, etc. See pic above. Depending on the lake, running these small JOINTED lures right behind the boat (2'-10' of line out) can be killer.

2: 10" Jointed Believers. They have the best built in action there is.....and catch tons of fish. If you are going to run more than one, keep them seperated to avoid tangles.

3: Double bladed spinnerbaits.

But I'd buy a couple of 10" jointed Believers and try that first!!

Early in the year, try to short line troll some of those shallow raiders over the early weeds. You can run those anywhere from 2-5 or 6 feet down just over the weed tops. Try to run those when the spinnerbaits aren't getting action. Then move to the DR's when the fish are on the weedlines and suspended.

I also like to run small Jakes and Grannies early on, and bigger ones once the fish move out. Make sure to cover a variety of depths from shallow to deep when the fish move out off the breaks, if they do on the lakes you'll be fishing.

Also, take some time to learn the running depths of a few baits. That in itself will help immensely. Then when you know a handfull, learn a couple of more. Make sure to keep a good log of how deep they are running, on what lenght of line, and at what speed.

Good luck, the sound of a clicker scream'n is awesome!!!

Wiley's are great trolling baits, as well as Jakes, Grandmas, Tuff Shads, Believers, Ernies, Depth Raiders, and DDDs. Early in the season Super Shad Raps, Lil Ernies, 6 inch Jakes, and 5 and 7 inch Grandmas are better options

The 1st question anyone new or old to trolling should ask themselves about any trolling bait is: At what depth dose it run and what is it's speed limitations. Many, most,, baits that I have tried fail miserably at speed control and blow out. And don't bang them off to many rocks or they'll break.

Can I get a bait where I want it, at any speed from as slow as I can go to 10 mph. You find a bait like that and then you have something. After that it's all about sex appeal and what tuns you on cause the fisherman catches the fish not the lure! Tanker don't get caught in the trap,, cause it'll co$t ya!

The things that we can control: In the order of priority trolling or casting are: #1 depth and #2 speed,,,, and way down on the list is: size, color and finally MOST fisherman's favorite control, "action".

Just a thing here on action, action should be thought of as an Aid in a catch not as a control. You could use the very best action that has ever been created IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! (dramatic huh?) and if the fish are in 30' and this so called great action bait only gets to 10' we are not likely to hook up. Action should be thought of as a speed control / a temperature thing. A slower action should be tested,,, used in low temps and a fast action in the warmer times of the year. Hope it helps!

How much money do you have? If you get serious about trolling you had better have deep pockets! I can run six rods when two of us are trolling and that means that if they want firetiger 9inch Grandmas, I have six of them out.8 and 10 inch jointed and straight Believers, 8 and 10 inch Jakes or 7.5 and 9 inch Grandmas, Ernies, Depth Raiders, Terminators, Super Shad Raps. All of these and more are good. You need deep, medium and shallow divers. Normally in the fall I do great on big baits, but this fall they wanted 8inch Believers and Ernies, and Super Shad Raps. Some will not work if you troll fast, some don't work slow, but you need both so you can give the Muskies what they want. I would get some 8 and 10 inch straight believers, 8inch jointed Believers, Jakes or Grandmas, Ernies, and Super Shad Raps. Start with a few in proven colors and add what works. Get a couple Wiley's too. You can't get new Terminators this year unless The Rocket Man needs more money for the Rocket Sled or for the t$##y Bars. I don't like the 10 inch jointed Believers becouse they are hard to get running right, got one I can't do a thing with over 3mph. Three of my four biggest fish have come off Super Shad Raps, the second biggest was on a 9inch Grandma. Later

For shortline trolling in the summer I run wiley headshakers ,8"Tuff shads ,bagleys db6 , small mordas minnows . For trolling deep in the fall I stick with legend plows ,perchbaits , and 10" hookers .
