I love throwing jerkbaits, but the question is, when do you reach for a glider like a jerko, squirrko, hughes river, slammer glider, etc. etc. and when do you reach for an up and down "chop bait" like a suick, or a bobbie.

I like using shallow gliders when the bait fish are making surface activity. I also use gliders when I am fishing over weeds and I can only allow my lure to go down 1-2 feet.

Chop baits like the Suick, I use over deeper weeds or in weed pockets. I will also use suicks over more open water, 10+ feet, and get them to dive with long slow pulls and extra weight.

Different strokes.......just like every other lure type.
I love using Suicks over weeds where I'll give them sharp twitches instead of pulls and actually will let them come almost to the surface before I continue. If I can get a good loud "BLOOP" on the the first yank.....better yet. I never used weighted Suicks, but weighted the floaters to do a slow back-up. Those were my fish killers on flowages and over shallow weeds....figuratively speaking.
Any glider...a Castor, a Hughes River, an Undertaker....I'll start over the weeds and as I get nearer the weed drop I'll work a lot of pauses into the retrieve. Most all of my fish come from below and on the pause. I always work several pauses to let the lure "hang" on the retrieve, which is one reason that I like lighter or neutrally buoyant gliders instead of heavey or fast sink rate lures.
I know one guy who lives in Rhinelander that could dance his Undertakers over the weeds, then change rod position at the weed edge and make the thing go down off the break to score fish.
The time and place is up to you, and you'll decide on your presentational likes and dislikes the more you fish them.

It all depends on weeds and depth, if it is really weedy and sloppy I will use an unweighted jerk bait like a Suick or Bobbie, and if the weeds are slightly below the surface I will probably go with an unweighted Reef Hawg, a Phantom, or a Slammer Drop Belly Glider (and this year the new ERC Hellhound). If it is rock structure, I will use weighted Suicks and Bobbies to get down deeper, as well as weighted Reef Hawgs and HR Shakers.

Also when the weeds are just below the surface I will try topwaters, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits for a faster presenation. I will follow up with slower moving jerk baits, twitch baits, or gliders if the fish are not that active. I can often move fish on jerk baits, twich baits, gliders, or soft plastics when nothing else works.

I like glide baits during pre-spawn and post turnover the best but working one fast can work well during the warmer weather. I like working jerkbaits a bit faster so I like them between the 55's. Fast hard jerks with some pauses.

What Beav said.

Suicks are great for popping above the stuff as described by Beav. Castors, Wabulls, etc. are my go-to rigs for erratic, nasty, bad boy behavior that triggers the BLAST type of strike I'm looking for over cover, stones, or deep water.

Magnum Slow Tease from Hawgseekers.com A unique combination of jerk bait that hangs and I mean "hangs"... Give it a slack line pop like a Reef Hawg and it will take off from one side to the other in a irratic fassion. 25+ fish in my boat over the past two season with this bait.

Gliders are always my LAST choice. Never use a glider when you could use a pull bait or a twitcher.

Never ever use a glider when clarity is subdued, unless you are less than 5 feet and then, don't use a glider until the others don't get fish.

I have used Jerkos, HRs, and they have a nice movement. The Jerkos are too one-dimensional. Back and forth, back and forth. I work them over weeds but ripping them through weeds is tough. And if you get weeds on it, it kills the action. This is when I go to a Suick. To label a Suick up and down is limiting it's use. I weight my Suicks, modify the eyelet, bend the tale etc. and it acts like a glide bait. Only you can rip it through weeds, bounce it off rocks, and work it very erratically. Hard to describe the action of them but if you can imagine a drunk Manta. Up-down-left-right-twisting-turning-rolling....they go everywhere. #1 bait in my box..... The Bobbies too, if weighted right can become an erratic glide bait.

I use whatever the fish want at any given time. I have not seen a preference for jerks or glides by season. Its more lake, local weather and water type then to just put those baits into seasons. I had times with 37-39 deg. water when the fastist glider I had was the only bait that got a fish. Keep a very open mind and never @ss- sume anything!

Gliders are my go to's in heavy current situations in very dark water. Baits like reef Hawgs and Jerkos are hard to beat in those situations, especially in Spring and fall, when the lure can almost be stopped in place, and/or worked quickly during the same cast. Jerkos have really become one of my favorites, as they dive very well on a bit longer pull, and also can be walked back and forth if needed. I love them for open water suspendo fishing as I can dictate speed, depth, and action depending on mood and conditions. I am not a big fan of gliders that do nothing but go back and forth. Started using the Nitro from H20 tackle a couple years ago, and love it for its darting flash and roll. Great lure on LOTW when things got tough the past couple seasons on particular spots that I knew fish were using. I like my Bobbies in heavy weeds, and for popping them on the surface on shallow flatswhere I've spotted a fish at mid day.
