| I'm looking to buy a marine radio for my boat. I was wondering how well the hand held radio works? I would be using it for tournaments and the great lakes. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks

Location: Holly, MI | If reasonably possible (antenna not in the way) go with a mounted unit especially for the Great Lakes. You wii not be happy with the range of the handhelds unless they have some type of remote (much longer) antenna system available these days. On a trip up to Quebec on a large lake the guys with the 8 foot antennas could chat at will with distance not being a problem. The guys with the short steel whip antennas could hear us but could not transmit back. I'm talking about miles (maybe 5-10) and you don't want to ever be stuck way out in Lake Michigan with no way to transmit to shore. I only have a 17 ft center console but went with the 8 ft shakespear because even Lake St Clair is over 25 miles across in some points.
