Has anyone seen the article in outdoor notebook about muskie poaching at Shelbyville? Apparently it is a big problem, as to the fact that there is no $ for Dnr officers and even when the DNR is called they don't have anybody close enough to catch the perpritrators ....... I wonder if anyone close to Shelbyville can verify this? It makes me sick!!! Anything we as muskie inc. members can do?

I have heard a few people kill any musky they catch down there, and I know the IDNR's budget has been slashed. Conservation officers normally deal with poaching, but I don't know what kind of resources they have or what budget they have allocated to patroling Shelbyville.

I live about an hour and twenty minutes from Shelbyville. Have I ever witnessed someone club an illegal fish to death or seen anyone throw them ashore? No (though I have seen one on land, and something tells me it didn't make the decision for itself). Do I hear guys talk about carry hammers in their boat's for those toothy *^%$#? Yes. Does it happen below the dam? Yes, I've seen guys snag them, but only by accident. They are just as surprised as the fish are when they see 40+" of muskie rise up with their crappie jig in its back. I've never seen anyone show animosity toward them, but I'm sure it goes on. I have the number of people to contact in my boat when I'm down there and I see someone poaching. I haven't had to use it yet. It's a shame, but there isn't much we can do. Especially now with the hit the DNR has taken from the State.

I witnessed two guys snagging at the spillway last year. We called the DNR on a cell phone, and were told that there wasn't a Conservation Police Officer anywhere near there.
The operator at the 1-800 tip line asked us to call back again in one hour if the guys were still doing it.
They couldn't be anymore blatent about what they were doing. I was pissed, but what can you do???
I hope every state of Illinois resident signed the petition that was circulated at the Chicago show. Hopefully it will bring some attention to the DNR's plight right now.
THANK YOU GOVENOR ROD BLAGOVICH. WE APPRICIATE ALL THAT YOU ARE DOING FOR THE STATE (tons of scarcasim)

Muskymike, did I see you on TV last weekend white bass fishing the river?

I hope there is something they can do about the poachers there. I heard some of them bring a gun.

You guys could always video them doing it, and try to get a license plate #. (although, try to be safe about it. Not worth getting hurt over) Then turn the tape and info into the DNR. That would be about as good as you could get if they are understaffed.

I have never fished there, so I am unaware of what goes on there, but it's a shame.

Poachers DO get caught, though:

Restaurant owner pays price for illegal possession of fish
Wednesday, January 26, 2005
Alayna DeMartini and Dave Golowenski
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
In the end, all 26 of the sleek, shimmery saugeye had to be dragged out of the restaurant’s freezer and
thrown away.
And it cost restaurateur Tommy Ye $10 per fish in fines to the Ohio Division of Wildlife because they were
caught illegally in Hoover Reservoir.
Ye was fined an additional $500 yesterday in Franklin County Environmental Court for possessing the fish,
which were caught last year and stuffed into the freezer of Panda Inn, 1446 Bethel Rd.
Saugeye, a mild-flavored fish, is a cross between walleye and sauger. The saugeye that Ye stored in the freezer
were caught with gill nets, which are illegal in Ohio because they catch too many fish at a time.
"Saugeye are difficult fish to catch if you’re fishing them legally with a pole," Environmental Judge Harland
Hale said.
When Ye was caught with the fish in March, he told authorities he wasn’t serving it to customers at his
restaurant, said Kandy Klosterman, a state wildlife investigator.
"I can’t say whether I believe it or not," Klosterman said.
Ye, of Powell, told authorities that the fish were going to be given to him and his employees.
Authorities disposed of the fish because they went bad after being carried in and out of the freezer to be
examined during the past year.
The saugeye were found at Panda Inn after wildlife officers caught two employees using a gill net to fish the
reservoir in the predawn hours of March 30.
Ye’s brother, Hua-Xin Ye, and Jiahe Weng were found guilty of taking fish by illegal means, possessing more
than the six-saugeye-per-person limit and possessing a gill net. They were sentenced in June in Environmental
Court, fined $300 and ordered to pay $500 in restitution. When arrested, Hua-Xin Ye and Weng’s net was filled
with 108 fish, Klosterman said. "The ethical way to go about it would be with a hook and line, but these guys took
advantage of the system," she said.
