I have a basic 14 ft Alumnacraft. What would be a good trolling motor for this? Also, do any of the basic motors come with a way to control them remotely like a foot pedal?

Minn Kota Power drive models have a remote feature available and Motorguide may have something also. I will say this about buying trolling motors, get the Largest Pound Thrust you can afford, but don't get less then 36lbs mininum... 36 should pull a 14' boat no problem, but a 40 or 44 would pull even better, 55 even better then those... Most Minn Kota Power drives have a Maximizer feature which gives you real good speed control, its a slider switch that can get so slow you can almost count the blade rotations, all the way up to full power...

I second Minnkota. Although I recommend the Maxxum. They're the most reliable trolling motor out there by far.

I've looked in the back of The Motor Clinic her in MN and all they work on are Pinpoints and Motorguides. They rairly see Minnkota's. When they do it's usually a footpedel problem with a powerdrive.

Are you going to use the boat on "electric only" lakes? If that's the case I'd go with a 24V system. If not you can get by with a 12V Minnkota. You ideally want to run the motor at less then 1/2 throttle. Anything over 1/2 and you really start to chew down your battery life. For that size boat, you should be able to run a 36# thrust w/o a problem. But then again, I've never heard anyone complane that they have too much power or too much battery life.
