Location: Des Moines IA | Is there anyway to tell real weagles from musky nut ,as opposed to Weagle blanks put together and painted by a 3rd party? And what rod and leader selection do you use with them? I haven't thrown one yet , but I would think the 6'3 all star xheavy would do fine. I usually tie my own 100 lb. mono leaders but, something tells me the 175 lb. straight wire leader would make it easier to "walk the dog" with this lure. Am I anywhere close to right on this? | Put a 300 lb Bucher split ring on front of that puppy Single strand metal leader 90 lb test plus is necessary for best action Standard 80 lb superline such as Power Pro or Cortland Spectron 7'6" H or MH rod with a fast action rod tip to get the Weagle to perform optimally See the Musky Nut discussion for more details I have seen people struggle to get the hang of this lure, and the wrong rod will not enable you to use it properly, but once you have it down it is oh so sweet! Mr. Sworrall said tonight his number one lure for Wabigoon! Need I say more? Edited by muskyboy 1/19/2005 12:25 AM

| whatever rod you use, just remember to allow plenty of slack line. a longer rod with a fast tip will help this. go slow. | |||

| Could some one give me an example of a fast action rod?? Would that be a stiff tip, or flexible.. Thanks, MuskyDan | |||

| fast tip = more flexible; combine it with a rod that has medhvy or hvy backbone (less flexible) Edited by lambeau 1/19/2005 7:34 AM | |||

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I really think you will have a hard time using the Weagle, in the manner it was made to work, on a 6'3 rod. I use 7'6 and sometimes 8 footers with the Weagle. Longer Rod and a simple drop of the rod with about a foot of slack line will make this lure perform the "Death March". The shorter stiff rods will make the lures go sub-surface and you will not be happy with the action of the Weagle. Use a longer rod, and a 10 inch straight leader with about a foot of slack.

Posts: 2089 | I used a 7'3" jerkbait rod(heavy) all season with it and caught a few fish(46).The rod used is not as important as it's been made out to be.Lots of opinions.Keep slack and spend some time determining HOW it works and you'll get bit. Steve

Posts: 158 Location: Eagan, MN | What reels are suggested for the Weagle? With Jackpots I have found that it is easier to keep a cadence when I crank one revolution for every jerk of the rod. It turns out that if the reel is too fast or slow it will not allow me to do this. A 7000 C3 or 6500 C3 is perfect, a Calcutta 400 too slow, and a 7000 Big Game too fast. Does that make any sense, and does this type of thing even apply to the Weagle?

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I used both the 6-9 Heavy and the 6-0 Heavy Premier rods with the Weagle and had no problems working the bait with either and this was my first time tossing it. It takes a little more finess than a Viper, but don't be affraid or intimidated of its size. Maybe I wasn't working it right, but it walked and SWOOSHED ok to me. Kinda sounds like a kid jumping into a deep puddle of water.

| My one and only day with the Weagle, before lakes froze over, I was using my 6'2" Jackpot rod. My first few tries were ugly. Weagle going under water, or going left, left, left -- Then I made some changes to my retreive and WOW! Now it seems easy to work, just make sure to keep some slack in the line. Can't wait for open water! Steve Sedesky | |||

Posts: 4266 | I have stripped and repainted a dozen Weagles for people. I guess that makes my work "third party Weagles". As far as fakes or copycats, let the buyer beware. You can bet that there will be people copying Weagles just like every other lure gets copied. Make sure that you buy from a reputiable dealer, or contact Steve and Steve to make sure that they sell to the people that you are buying from. As far as rods, I've used 6'9" Avids, 7'6" Heavy Avids and Premiers, and all of them worked well. It's not a hard lure to work if you know how to use most any glider type lure where you snap the slack out of the line without pulling the lure forward. You're right about the leader, you definitely want wire at the front of this, not mono. Beaver
