Posts: 5 | What type of rod do you like to use when fishing spinnerbaits, more specifically large single hook spinnerbaits(grinders, rad dogs). I've had great success with spinnerbaits over the past few years but I'm having a hard time finding a rod that fishes them effectively, I miss alot of fish. I'm in the market for a spinnerbait rod(st. croix, thorne bros custom diamondback, loomis, etc) and would to like to know your opinions. Thanks Edited by MuskyMack 1/17/2005 2:58 AM

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | The company really doesn't matter, as all the companies you have mentioned make good quality rods. I would suggest that you use a 8 foot medium heavy rod with spinner baits. Easier to throw, easier to work around weeds, stumps, rocks, great figure 8 rod, ect...

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | If you are looking for specific recommendations, I have great luck throwing spinnerbaits with a 7'6" St Croix premier. In fact this is one of the best all around rods and is suited for a variety of applications. It works great with Bucktails, spinnerbaits, cranks, and bulldawgs. A very good stick that gives you a bunch of options.

| I throw spinnerbaits about 95% of the time. I have a Loomis Muskie edition 7'6" heavy action bucktail.( Not sure of model # here at work) I throw 1- 2oz. tandems all day long with this and feel it is a perfect rod for spinnerbaits. Steve "The Muskie Junkie" Ruhmann | |||

| I use my 8 foot BPS MH rod for bucktails and spinnerbaits along with the Abu c3 7000 Big Game reel. A great combo, but my 7'6" St. Croix Premier rod also works well for that presentation. | |||

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I like my 8' Al Star inshore x heavy(really isn't extra heavy though). I like the length for loading up spinnerbaits, which do not cast as good as bucktails so you will need assistance from the rod for your backs sake. I also like the length for steerage in, out of, over, and through cover. Seems spinnerbaiting often requires alot of movement with the rod tip to get into or out of desirable areas(if you like fishing weeds with them). Length also helps when setting hooks on a fish while grinding it through the weeds. The leverage really boosts hookups. Edited by Reef Hawg 1/18/2005 5:25 PM

Location: Contrarian Island | I like the 8'6" Western Inshore/Big Game by All Star... since I heard they are going to stop making these if you find them..buy them! at 120 bucks these rods can't be beat for the money...

Posts: 333 Location: menasha wi 54952 | I would go with the 8' Premier over the 7'6" Premier for spinnerbaits and most bucktails. The 8'er will load up a bit more and give you a bit more control with out of position hookups. There is a definite difference between the two. MR

| 7'6 or 8' for sure Medium Heavy usually does the job unless you are talking about HUGE baits, but one company's MH is the same as another's H or XH so pick a rod you feel comfortable with and don't get stuck on labels. The 7'6's are easier to transport...so that tends to be the stick that is always at my side | |||

Posts: 158 Location: Eagan, MN | I would agree with the advice above about using longer sticks. I use an 8' TB MH for regular spinnerbaits like grinders and stump hawgs, and an 8' TB Heavy for the big stuff. A Heavy TB has roughly the same power as a MH Premier.

| I throw ALOT of Rad Dogs. I have been using a 7' St Croix Avid the last two years. Just awesome is all I have to say. Remember, I am only 4'8" though | |||

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | I fish with various sized CJs spinner baits about 75% of the time and prefer my 8' Gander Mountain IM8 Guide rod. It is soft tipped, makes for long and easy casts, is very light, has excellent power for big fish, and is very affordable at $80 regular price and $70 when they are on sale in the spring.
