Heading for Mexico in a couple weeks and I have a trip for some cuda action. Has anyone ever done this? Should I bring my own DDD?

I have fished 6 times in Cancun. Three different guides and I can tell you their equipment sucks. I have found their baits and lures to be OK. They do not sharpen anything, so bring a file. If it is a concern to you, I would take a 2 piece med rod and a med weight spinning reel. Hope this helps.

Do a search for Cuda tubes. hey are 9-12" of tubing with a trable at the end and a weight at the front. the cudas love them. Also try live Mullet, blue runners or pin fish. I had loads of follows from large cudas in Lauderdale casting medium bulldawgs, had a hit that pulled the back end of the bait off

I was in that area last spring for my honeymoon. I stayed next to the harbor in Puerta Adventuras which is about 15 miles south of playa del carmen. We took a charter for sails which rocked!!!! One of our bellhops took us out also for some shore fishing for cudas and other inshore species. We had a blast!! I then went down on my own with my own equipment, but got tore up pretty badly with my 20 lb mono. I found some copper wire and made some leaders which helped quite a bit, but wish I had taken my musky gear instead of the lighter gear that I had. I used some larger finnesse fish twitched on the surface and they got smoked by the cudas! Also used a giant Pop'R and that also got chewed up. We got a tip from our bellboy to fish with the Blacktide boat and did so with great success landing a few sailfish including a 11-12'er that my wife got on topwater on a short flat line. We got the boat much cheaper than charter service prices, and one thing we learned was to not use the charter service offered at the hotel. They want your $$$$. go down to the harbor, and walk around the boats and see who is catching! I would go for billfish, and the cudas will come throughout the day. We payed $300 for the boat for the day for ourselves, and I would recommend getting the boat for just you two, or just your group. drop me an email and I can send you pics and some more info on it if you wish.

I'm heading down there myself this spring and would love to hook into a nice sailfish myself. But I've been told that only Mexicans were allowed to shore fish on the Mayan Riviera (Playa del carmen area). Is this true? Otherwise, I'm bringing my musky gear. Did someone say, I need copper wire? Will Powerpro work down there. I've never fished in the salt so any help would be great.

you will need a wire leader for cudas for sure. In some high pressured areas ( like fishing piers) cudas will seldomly bite if they see a large long leader as they have then the presentation many times. I used to work on a cruiseship and while in port I had my gear with me and was never told in a year that I was not aloud to fish there. When fishing for cudas use a very fast presentation. Some guys will take a rapala and break the lip off. I am heading down to Lauderdale in April and and bringing a bunch of musky gear to try on the cudas. For live bait, Cudas love eating what we do. Snapper, Grouper , Yellowtail... the laws on the ocean are if the fish is legal to keep, its legal to use as bait.

I only used copper because I did not have any steel along. They broke the copper quite often. i was fishing where a creek entered and the water was not really clear so leader did not matter. On the other side of the break wall I could not get bit until after dark in the really clear water. No one told me I could not fish.
