And I don't mean mayonnaise...when trolling, are your lures running deeper that are set forward or aft? I've found that when I'm trolling for muskies I set the rods up so the ones closer to the bow are short with less line out, therefore running shallower with the same type lure, than the rods towards the back of the boat which have more line out and run deeper. But I run them opposite when trolling for other species, deeper lines set aft either with riggers or deeper divers and forward rods with shallow-running lures long. One thing that sticks with me is something I believe Captian Frank suggested here in the past and that's "keep them 10ft apart" which helps reduce tangles for sure. How do you spread them, what works for you?

Here's a shot from today's left-side set (front 30'out then 50',70', and short in the prop-wash);

The back-deep rod running about 20ft down over 30 f.o.w. landed the mustache fish today;

Webguy, is that a carolina skiff? How do you like it for casting if you cast?

My trolling setup is deifferent than yours. I have two planer board rods out on each side and two down rods. I normally run short line medium or deep diving lures off each rod. My line out can vary from 5 on the shallow board to 30 on the deep board but that can vary greatly as I sometimes will only run 10ft out on the deep board at times. My setup really does not dictate how much line I run on each rod.

The boat is a 14' Nordic and is set up just for trolling. I use it from late fall to early spring while my other boat is up on blocks, yesterday was the first time I had it out since March. When the water is warmer I run my lines from 5 to 25 feet out, trying to keep them about 10ft apart and I fish shallower. When it's as cold as it is I find more fish deep so I run them long in deeper water, it's usually the deepest/longest line that gets the fish.

How does the spinning outfit work out for ya? I've never seen that before in a spread.

I make do with what I have. It actually has worked well, Penn ss series reel on medium-heavy Penn rod with 50lb. Power Pro, it has caught lots of fish including the 41 that day, 44 inches I think was the biggest on that set-up. It is next in line to be replaced with another Daiwa line counter set-up when funds become available, maybe Christmas.

I forgot to mention that was my heaviest set-up before catching muskie fever.

That picture reminds me of the old days when I used to be "mate" on my brothers Lake Michigan Charter boat. In the spring, when fish were shallow, we ran setups like that with flat lines, dipseys, spoons with keel sinkers....and low and behold, a 15# rainbow would smack the line closest to the boat and than take off on a run down and across every other line and then jump 10' in the air while dragging everything else behind him.
Yup, sure miss those day.
"You got those lines straightened out yet?"
"Yes sir! Straight up your captains quarters."
Oh yeah, very pretty fish.
I use a couple of St Croix glass rods when I troll with my daughter, because she has an easier time reeling. I've got them rigged with Daiwa SS1600's and #30? Fireline.
Takes a little time to get used to turning the rod in the holder, but mine clamp to the rail, so I can rotate them pretty easily. They are shorter rods, so they are usually up front, close to her.

Mine is really easy, one rod on the left and one on the right which equals my rod and a buddies. In Ontario we're only allowed one rod per guy so it's a no bariner. I like Beav's story...reminds me of salmon fishing running lots of lines and same kinds of headaches...er, fun!

My front most rods might have up to 24 oz of lead on them and the lure is not even behind the boat. Planer boards get zero to 6 oz (mix it up). Back rods depending on the lure will get 4 to 12 oz. None of them run too deep at 5 mph anyway.

I tried a little different setup this fall, my partner and I trolled six lines, and of all the fish we caught, not one got tangled in the other lines.
we each have a down rod, then the next rod is the outside planer board, and the rod in the front is the inside planer board, when a fish hits either planer it simply clears itself of the other, granted I usually run the inside planer a little shorter than the outside, but it seems that this setup was unstoppable this year. I'm not saying it wasn't a dance floor though when a pole did go off, cause there was some serious cranking going on if it happened.
