I just made a major upgrade this summer from my old 30hp Johnson to an '04 200hp Optimax on my new rig. This fall I've had the engine alarm go off a few times at slow/idling speeds, usually while trimmed up a good bit near shallow water. Motor continues to spit water throughout. Still learning the ropes of a big motor but I'm guessing that I'm not getting enough water into the engine while trimmed up at low speed as trimming down seems to correct it. Does this sound right and is this normal for a larger motor or could I have a bad water pump? Would appreciate any feedback from those with more experience!

I would get that thing to the shop quickly. Make sure they hook it to the computer. I know someone that had the buzzer going off during extented idle sessions and the mechanic didn't find anything. All of a sudden it got worse and then they hooked the computer up and it had been without oil 40 times per the computer and needed a new powerhead. Get their findings in writing just in case there are problems down the road.

I have two friends who's 225 Opti's do the same when motor is either left tilted or trimmed very high. The sensor in the small oil tank under the cowl/hood is positioned so that when the motor is tilted very high that the sensor is out of the oil. The engine still gets oil since the output tube is on the bottom of the little resivoir. They tilt it back down and within a minute it quiets down.

As suggested you may want to have it looked at by a mechanic but from what you describe it sounds like what I mentioned above.

My 150 Otpi doesn't like to be idled too far in no wake zones in summer water temps or it will overheat. Opti's need a ton of water presure to stay cool. You should consider buying the service manual for your motor. It can be very helpful when you are somewhere remote and don't have a mechanic to look at your motor. The manual will tell you what the alarm you are hearing is indicating. For instance a solid tone alarm is an overheat. A rapid tone is a oil alarm. They have many different tones each indicating something different.
