I winterized my boat today, and when I was draining the lower unit grease, it was all water coming out. Does that mean I have a blown seal? If so, what, or how would I fix that, or is it relatively inexpensive to get fixed in the spring. I did put new grease in it, which was probably a lame idea, but what the heck. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

time for a boat tech. to fix it. it needs to be fixed asap. couse things could rust in there and that would be bad. how mutch water came out. sounds like u defianantly have a bad leak. if the oil is milky looking then u have a small leak but when u took the screw out and water came out then your seal is mostly gone in somesort of way.. get it to a marine tech soon....bill

Thanks Bill! I will get it in as soon as I can. It was pretty much all water, and there looks to be grease on the outside of the motor on the shaft. I was afraid of that.

When's the last time you changed the impeller or water pump, It's pretty easy to pull the lower end off and take it in. You can still put the boat away and if your at all handy fix the lower end seals yourself. The problem is mostly caused by line in the prop, it will rip the seal if not taken out right away. Email me at work, those Tech bills can put a dent in those X-Mas gifts.

Hmmmm, line in the prop, like putting the boat in neutral, while fighting a fish, then putting it in gear to straighten the lines out, and having one of the lines get not soooo straight.
