what are your experiences with this bait for deep water applications? How is the hook-up rate for the 10" ones?

Try Storms they get down faster, but you have to add lower trble and cut one of the top hooks and bend the other up so they don't roof the hook.

Wouldn't throw the 10 inch. Too much bait for available hooks sites even with the stinger. 8 inch is an excellent bait however but needs the stinger. Agree with above on bending up top hook. More bite. (don't break off the barb)

How do you add the lower treble to the Storms?

First cut off the second single hook at the bend where it comes out of the back, then make a deep cut in the belly of the bait and you will find the wire that the second hook is attached to. Cut the eye and shank of the second hook off and you will be left with a wire loop. Bend this downwards so that it will stick out of the bottom of the bait and seal up the cut with a hot blade or a soldering iron. Then you can use the wire like a conventional hook hanger and add a split ring and treble to it.
Hope the description makes some sense! The mod works well and is very strong and reliable.

tim, do you have a picture of such a modified lure? I use a rig with two trebles now and keep the back hook. Most pike just inhale it and yet a lot seem to spit them out just as rapidly

Hi Dirk

Hopefully the picture will appear in this post, we'll see! It's a simpler mod to do than to describe. I use the big cstaics a lot too, the trouble is that the internals aren't very strong, especially on the 10" ones so it's a good idea to run a bit of 7 strand from the single hook to the treble and to an extra treble attached towards the back on the bottom (like a deep invader with a wire spike in the body to hold the hook). I have had the 10" one pulled apart by moderate sized fish.
