Somewhere between rocking this kid to sleep and the size 14 shoes he now wears as he looks down at me, we have not gotten much muskie fishing time. Though it is my passion, I understand it is not for everyone, and would never push a child into musky fishing. However, we have occasionally gotten some boat time between soccer, my weekend work, and his other activities and interests.

The soccer season ended, and we now had a coinciding day off and uncomitted day for him, and I cornered him into a day of musky fishing. We had one of those rare days with good water, good sky, good temps and good activity. We quickly got fish going and he soon had his first legal in the boat, pretty much because of his own persistence, and making that extra cast to a piece of cover that had already been well dissected by both our baits. His reward was his first legal musky, a chubby 30.5 incher. Although he has seen and handled much bigger fish, this was the first he had caught. I was really excited and his hands were shaking 5 minutes later. We had brought media systems with us and got some historical documentation.

The day stayed good. As his endurance waned somewhat in the afternoon, I was about to quit early, put it on the road and call it all great, when...the activity period I had been plotting lately kicked in, and we were in the midst of more biting and following muskies until dark. My son, picking up a strike with a full leap out of the water after tossing the bait, and a nipping hitting follow and another follow, all on his own and behind me.

He doesn't know I am posting this about him, so how about a few words of congratulations for Kelvin Jeffrey Lucas, 15, who now can say, "Yeah, I caught a legal musky. Nothing to it!"

Congratulations to you and your son, way to go, and that is the same age I caught my first musky, a 37 inch tiger from the Chip. Like all of us your son will now be hooked for life!

Congrats on the fish! 15 years old and a size 14 shoe. No wonder you work weekends, must cost a fortune just to feed him!

OUTSTANDING!! FSF, great post, and congratulations to your son. If he grows a bit, I have a pair of size 15 shoes from Vin Baker.
