I started to think about just how much I really love catching muskies, but what I really enjoy is putting them back in the water, letting them recharge, and the feeling of their powerful pull out of my grasp. It is so sweet to watch them slowly swim away!

Got a great release on one yesterday, Sunday.
He followed my bait all the way to the
boat...saw the follow and proceed to do figure 8s...he
was still following so I figured he was for sure in a
positive feeding mode. I slowed my figure 8s waaaaay
down. I then thought maybe the figure 8s were too
small and tight for him to make those tight of
turns...so...I led him in a big 'ol circle around the
back of the boat, around the motor and he was STILL
following. I know he saw me the whole time this was
going on...but he didn't care. This was going on for a
good 10 seconds by now...and just as I got around the
motor to the other side of the boat...WHAM! HE hit it
and hit it hard!~ Got the hookset in good...one dive
under the boat and I already had the Beckman in
hand...brought him back up...swooped the net under him
and continued to leave the net over the side of the boat.
I was ableto unhook him very easily as he actually layed there
and let me do so. As soon as the hook was out...he was
going crazy and literally just swimming circles in the
net. It was like a big swimming pool for him with
nowhere to go. When he started swimming is when my
lure's hooks got tangled in the net so it took me a
minute to get the hooks out of the net. I was afraid
this guy was going to swim around and snag himself.
Got the hooks out of the net without a problem...took a quick
measurement, a whopping 31 incher...I never even
picked the fish up out of the water...I just dipped
the net back below the water line and pulled it way
from him and away he went. I never even had to touch
the fish. Perfect release.

Releasing fish is a GREAT feeling and watching them swim away is what this is all about.

Just wish more people here in Indiana would like to see them swim away, or at least have a chance to....

No "Release in the Grease"

I had a client get a 46 the other day, his first musky, and he was just as excited about watching it swim away as he was while fighting the fish. The sight of the fish swimming away, back half out of the water, tail kicking, ect.. is totally awesome!

It is just about as good as the hook up and fight. I had one last summer that seemed ok when I let her go but then went belly up as she drifted away from the boat. I was so worried that I ended up spending the next 10 minutes with her until she finally took off so hard she soaked me with a good tail thrash. Only then did I feel good about the release.

I get so excited when a fish is on I pretty much black out and don't even remember half the fight.

But like Hulbert said, during the release when they are swimming away with their back half out of the water ... it's what it is all about. Nothing more exciting to me.

I loved it when I was reviving a 48" 30#+ with a couple boats watching. A lady asked why I was letting the fish go, my 10y/o daughter responded "Because it's way too nice of a fish to kill." The lady asked, "Don't you want a trophy on the wall?" and Rachel said, "Dad has more fun letting them go."

Love the Release sometimes that is the only chance I get to get a really good look at the fish.....By the time I get the hooks out, measure, picture which all seem like a blur since I am going threw the steps so fast, then I finally have a chance to get the fish back in the water and watch that ski go is great....Sense of pride.

Killer- no I'm not talking about Ranger's winter excercize program for muskiemen. I'm talking about her release

Here's two WI river fish from the last two evenings. First one is 36" released last night & second one is 37" the nite before. The night before that (7th)I had one that was +12" longer but she didn't make it into the net. Kinda hard netting them by yourself. But it sure was fun.

Have fun

Hey Al,
Not bad for a dock fish..:)
All I get off my dock are tiny perch.

I love to watch them swim away.
