Will be on LCO for during last week of September and was wondering if anyone has any "pointers" or "tips" that they are willing to share. . . . I have never fished LCO and not a big one for trolling - therefore would appreciate any help one areas for casting in shallows with top water and crankbaits. . .

Thanks,
Clayton

Hello Clay,

I've had some luck on LCO using a drop belly gliders on the weedlines. Also fish will respond to bucktails, the faster you can retrieve them the better. They seem inclined to only follow slow moving tails. If the water temp is warm I would fish the weed edges, but if it has cooled some you may be able to fish shallower.

Use live bait and quickstrike rigs as well. Fish the deep breaks off the rock bars with deep diving cranks and rubber. This is not a numbers lake by any means, but that time of year can yield a big one.

Hi Grass,

Thank you so much for the info - not everyone likes to share this kind of valuable information.
I'll take your advice and pick-up a drop belly (any particular color?), I've been told hat natural colors work best on LCO. . . . I have also been told that Black Bucktails with silver works best.

Thanks Again!

Clayton

I think brown, white, and silver are all good colors for LCO. Also there are tons of Pike in LCO, I've been keeping a few of them each time for a meal. If you want to ask an expert about the Hayward lakes, go to TheNextBite.com and aske Pete M your question.

Based on the water temps I have heard, you will most likely be getting LCO right before or right as it begins to turnover. Let us know how you do.

Thanks.

Started on 10-Oct-04 with 60 degree water temps dropped to 54 Oct 16. Through tues air temps reached 70 daily and nights were also unseasonably warm. Weather turned typical on Wed and stayed that way. Had suckers out all week and they drew nothing. 4 guys in another cabin trolled up 4 fish from 32-38 I believe. They trolled in 8-14'. My partner got a 35+ in 12 ' water at 6pm on the 14th on a Squirko. I got a nice 48"x22.5", 30# on the 12th. The last warm day. Got her on an Eagle tail in 14' on a mid lake hump on the 5th figure-8. Other than the fish we caught we saw NO other follows.
