Posts: 476 Location: WI | Does anyone know if they have settled on a date and location for the Musky Classic next year? We are trying to plan a trip to the "V", but do not want to go the same time as the Classic. Thanks!! GotOne

Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | All of this is total here-say and pure gossip.... however I did talk to Bob Mehsikomer about this during the BigV tourney. Dan and I both fish the Three Lakes chain alot and planted the seed with Bob to include the Three Lakes chain along with the Eagle River event next year. Bob then replied saying that Eagle River did not want the tournament there. He was shocked.... probably more than Dan and I were to hear that.... since Eagle River probably has more tournaments than anywhere else in musky land. Thus, I have no idea what to believe.... but would guess that IF there is a Simply Fishing contest in 2005 that it will be on BigV again. Just makes sense... since he already has all the contacts, facilities, and had such a warm welcome there. Just a guess though. jlong

told me it was going to become a trail with 3-5 events. All but the classic would be a pro-am. I'd hate to be the amateur that knock's off some "pros" 50".

If you go by the other species it seems the pros are anyone with enough money to enter.

Posts: 32934 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Here we go with the 'what makes a Pro?' question. Sheesh. 'Pro' in the fishing world doesn't necessarily mean 'professional' as in 'professional plumber'. Pro has as much to do with 'promotion' as 'professional'. Gander Mountain has a Walleye Pro staff, GMG. One of my close friends is a member. He's a river rat, a darned good stick, and does very well on the WAT. If one is a member of, say the Mercury Freashwater Fishing Team, what does that mean? I've been a member since about 1974, but I make my living selling, marketing, and promoting boats and like products. As a member of the Mercury Freshwater Fishing team, I promote Mercury products, branding, etc. My truck sports a sticker from Merc that says Mercury Pro Team. Am I a 'fishing Pro'? In some circles, yes. Am I a 'professional fisherman'? No. Used to be, when I guided full time, but not anymore. So what's an 'AM'? That would be someone outside of the business, or just getting started. In some cases, 'Pros' from one walleye circuit sign on as 'AMs' for a different circuit's larger event. I also talked to Bob at the event, and he was leaning toward the Big V. Hey Big Bird, how can you be a Little Bird too? Also, it's obvious you do not understand how a Pro/Am works.

Posts: 244 Location: Mallard Island Lake Vermilion MN | Hi ya. First we heard it was to be out of state like mentioned above? Then a "Big Bird" like Client and friend from Kentucky told me it has been mentioned that Bob would like to do it again up here and location might be out by mid November? Looks like time will tell eh? Might have to have some outside help entering again in such short notice. OUCH, sure got spanked this year. ![]() Pricey, but it really was way FUN! Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | SW, my point is this. If I'm forking out over $2000.00 (with gas and expenses) I'm not really excited about the prospects of fishing with a guy just because he has a Merc decal on his window, I'd want to fish with a Professional not a Promotional. The PWT has standards (unlike the PMTT) that anglers have to meet in order to fish PWT events, actually, they have a resume they must submit. The Pmtt? Hell, I can just drive to the rules meeting and sign up...Hey, Now I'm a Pro if I'm fishing the Professional Musky Tournament Trail right? Anyways, I dont think there's enough Bucher's, Saric's, Heitings and Bob M's in the Musky world to draw AM's to a circuit or trail? Here's another way to look at it that you may get a kick out of..Would some guy pay over $2000.00 to sit with me in a boat for 2 days????? I'm Gander Musky Prostaff! Tuffy and Elby, you guys are gonna have to fork out some coint to fish with me at the Kly event!

Posts: 32934 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Well, GMG, then I guess you wouldn't want to fish with me. The suggestion is that it might be a Pro Am FORMAT, which means you will probably fish with a different Amateur every day. The Pro runs the boat, makes the decisions, and sets the overall agenda for the day of competition. The Am fishes hard, and sometimes puts most of the fish in the boat. The PWT doesn't have strict standards for the Ams, by the way. Some are very accomplished, some are not. One of the most common comments from the Ams onstage is the appreciation they have for learning so much on the water from the Pros. The Muskie industry really doesn't have a set standard yet for who is a 'Pro' and who is not. The PMTT is the only competitive game in town when it comes to Trails that are not one state or in some cases one lake. You'll find many anglers who fish the regionals also fish the PMTT, WMT, Rollie and Helens, and Hartmans events. A 'touring Pro' by Walleye definition is someone who fishes one full Pro AM circuit or more and has for at least two years. So driving up and fishing one PMTT won't get it. Also, the events mentioned will define a Pro TEAM, as there are two anglers in the boat together for the entire event, sharing expenses and knowledge, etc. Is a full time Guide a Pro? Sure, in every sense of the word. Some are quiet, and never write articles or talk at shows. Some do both, AND fish tournaments. What makes Steve Heiting a Pro? He is the editor of a Muskie magazine. He's a good stick, but is he a Pro? I guess one might classify him as one, he does seminars and schools, and runs one of the top fishing publications in the US. Jim Saric? He fishes Muskies , yes. He competed in the PMTT a few times, and fished the Classic. He writes, is a competitve walleye angler sometimes, and is a member of the NPAA. Sure, he's a Pro. But, if either was in JUST the walleye or bass world and wished to be a ranked Pro, they would have to fish either the PWT or the FLW Walleye Pro Circuits. If they wanted to rank well, they would have to fish an entire division and make the Championship. The NPAA (National Professional Anglers Association) has discussed several times adding a Muskie division. I'd like to see that happen.

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | SW...I'd fish with you any day. Boom lake next spring? They should move the event every year..different bodies of water would attract alot more people. I know that the cheif complaint of the PMTT is that the schedule is repetitive....but you gotta go where the money is given I guess. Heiting is (was) a guide as is (was) Saric, both of them are making thier living and are established in the industry...I'd consider them Professionals over anybody fishing the PMTT, they're educators. I just dont think the Musky world has gotten to the point of popularity as the Walleye world. Walleye tournys are alot more popular and less scrutinized than Musky ones. Posts: 376 Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Talked to Bob a few days ago and said he would like to do the Big V again, if not next year then maybe in 2006. I'd sure like to try it again, I doubt I would go and fish it anywhere else, just to busy during the summer to pre-fish another lake. ![]()

Posts: 7090 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Cyber Pro....but at what? Muskie fishing, definitely NOT. But Tommie, if that Old Towne Canoe sponsorship comes through and you turn pro, then can I be your Amatuer partner? Me, you, 4fts on Vermillion in the canoe....would make the 4.5fters off Flat Top on Eagle seem like ripples.
