OK, Buddy is out catching a bunch of suckers for the weekends festivities as I type......He said he is catching something that kinda looks like a carp...I thought it might be redhorse or little carp along with some suckers. Question- Is it legal to use carp/redhorse as bait in a lake you didn't catch it from (like I know you have to for gamefish)? Is it legal to use them period?? Has anyone had success in using redhorse/carp on quickstrike rigs? Do they last as long? Longer?? Cory

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | Cory, It's really going to vary from state to state (or province). Out here in Utah, we can't use live fish of any kind for bait. In fact on muskie waters, you can't even use a piece of dead bait any bigger than one square inch in size. Make sure you look at the regulations for any body of water or region you plan to fish. What makes perfect sense in one place may be unlawful in another. And what may be an unregulated rough fish in one place may be a sport species in another. Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | CP...I'd contact the game warden up there and ask. My thought is that it's legal because the fatheads and sucker minnows you can buy from bait shops are ok to use, why not these? Still, I'd ask, you dont want to introduce a banned species or something that's gonna grow out of controll like Rusty Crays.

Location: Minneapolis, MN | Cory - Here's a link to the regs http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/fhp/fish/regulations/2004/documents/hoo... I didn't see anything in there specifically about sucker harvesting and use in other lakes. You may want to check page 13 and 14 about minnow regulations.

At the Chicago Musky Show in January Jim Linder said Redhorse are the best live bait for muskies, even better than suckers. If legal, give it a try and let us know how they work! Steve

Posts: 1270 Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | Cory, redhorse are in the same family as suckers,as opposed to carp. I have found them mixed with black suckers in some baitshops. Never noticed any difference as to effectiveness or hardiness. Legal in Wi. for sure.

Location: Contrarian Island | Upon further inspection what I caught was just a small carp...it is about 10" in length and has 2 barbels, one on each side of it's mouth which would make it a carp...if I was a musky it would look tastey... I did catch 7 nice suckers 10-15" though...can't wait to drag em around thursday!
