Personally I think about 15 inches is ideal. 12 inchers are too short and 18 inchers are too long for casting and are diffucult to figure 8 with. Trolling I use at least 24+ inches.

Posts: 1046 | 8"-10" `s seem to work the best for casting musky sized baits for me. I don`t even like the 12" ones when fishing with say 10"jakes cause seems I loose some bait control on close incounters at the boat. I been making 36" for trolling!

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I agree with the Handyman. I like them around 9-inches for most of my client rods. If longer leaders are used I will hear the swivel contact the top guide to remind them to start the figure 8. Some of my longer rods will have 10 or 11-inch. As far as trolling leaders I use longer leaders for larger baits and smaller casting size for smaller cranks. I found that the shorter the leaders the better the lure action in some cases.

10 to 12 inches casting (single strand, seven strand, flouro, or mono) and 30 to 36 inches trolling (flouro or mono)

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | I use a leader mostly to protect against lure contact with the line. Thus, I like 10" of wire and then the hardware (BB swivel and Snap) so the total length is about 12". This is long enough to protect my line should a 10" lure such as a Jake get fouled up. Because I'm lazy.... I now use these leaders for all applications (smaller lures). Since I'm only using 100# Single Strand wire I haven't noticed any negative impact on the action of smaller lures. This may not be the best set-up... but I'm happy with it. jlong

Posts: 1185 Location: Iowa | Depends on the combo I am using and or the bait I am throwing...If I am throwing a jerkbait, stickbait, plastics or topwater, I will use a 12" straight wire leader that is anywhere from 100-170 lb...If I am throwing a crankbait, bucktail, or spinnerbait I will use a 14" -18" 7 strand wire leader anywhere from 100-170 again...And if I am trolling no matter what the lure I will use a 40" 7 strand wire leader that is 225 lb test...
