as stated before, suckers with a quick strike rig in Minnesota is illegal with TREBLES unless....... it's turned into a spinner rig. I obviously don't want to use a single hook rig which is currently legal in Minnesota.

Is a tailgunner acceptabe off the arse end or does the spinner have to be in FRONT of the sucker when the trebles are attached.

simple answer is fine..lets not let this get into a big fiasco

p.s. if unclear what a tailgunner is..it's a colorado (typically) blade from a spinner bait/bucktail that is attached to the bottom of the sucker in the rear end just before where the tail starts.

thx much.

Hey Greg,

From what I have heard, to use a quickstrike rig it must have some kind of spinner 3 inches from the hooks. I use my own rigs similar to a Lift-off rig and put a 00 silver spinner in front of the snap on the 7strand. If using bigger suckers that need leeds bigger than 3 inches, I will put the same 00 spinner on both 7strand leeds going to the hooks. Looks alittle more unnatural, but haven't found it to be a big deal. Just remember ever game warden is different, some don't care and some are really anal about it. I do not believe a tailgunner would make it legal.

Hope that helped,
MN

Boy, is that a stupid rule. Single hook kill rig OK, but not a quickstrike rig. What is going on in MN?!!! LOL I bet somebody could run up a pretty hefty cell bill in MN turning in all those who fish with a quickstrike rig! hehehe

I know that with smaller walleye type spinners with trebles, that just a small bead above the hooks is accepted.

MJB, you mean I can just use a bead without a blade? as long as it is in front of the sucker?

Mnesox, thx much. I tried to find 00 blades but couldn't. Where did you get yours? I assume that is a size? or is it a style?

Are you building your rigs from scratch and putting the spinner on before hand or is there a way to put a spinner blade on a rig that is already premade? (with a barrel swivel and snap on both ends)
a clasp of some sort?

thx guys.

If a small bead above a treble for walleyes is legally called a "lure," I don't see why the same idea can't be used for muskies. But we are dealing with much larger bait and possibly numerous trebles. Wouldn't tying a few strands of bucktail on the treble be considered a "lure" also? I think this is as sketchy as the WI trolling/position fishing issues. A DNR consultation would be best.

Hey Greg,

00 is the size of the blade. They are pretty small, like 1/2 inch or so.

I usually put them on while making the rig. If you already have rigs made up, just use tin snips and cut an opening in the spinner. Then just put the spinner on the wire and close up the opening.

Had a friend ask the local dnr office about this last year, they printed him a copy of the law that said it needed to be a spinner 3" from the hook. I guess its one of those gray areas. I would be safe and use a spinner.

Where you going?

Thx Mn, I like the tin snip idea for my premade ones (maybe use a small split shot to keep it from sliding down). I found some Wolverine Big Bite rigs at The ST.Croix store that Rob Meyers got me into a few seasons back. They have a spinner in front too.Interchangable clasp for silver/gold and orange blades.

Probably going to Bemidji area. Maybe MilleMacs too, depends.

That must be why JB rigs out of minnesota still makes a musky kill rig.

Shep, I hear ya, this is an all new frontier for a certain somebody to go out of state and do what they do best. The drool must be thick right about now.lol

I'll bring this back from the archives.

I just looked at the Minn fish reg's online PDF file and it doesnt say anything about a spinner having to be 3 inches in front of the hooks.

I'm getting geared up for some pitch back quick strike meat in Minnesota, wanna be legal.

I'm wondering if I can put the spinner at the point where the sucker harness attaches to the braid via split ring/ball bearing swivel............that would be about 18" in front of the suckers nose though........??

Minnesota DNR,,,651-296-6157..

Theres a lake in the metro that has some serious shore sucker fishermen in the fall,,I stop by after work sometimes to BS with them,,They 'ALL" have spinners on their quick strike"rigs,,,Im not so sure that Thorne bros dosent sell a pre rigged quick strike this way, not sure though, There was no imbreeding in my family so I dont sucker fish,,Thornes would know the rule though

Thx Hook, guess the best way is to just call the MNDNR, then I'l know for sure.

p.s. I wouldnt think there is any imbreeding in your family if that's what you think sucker users are..............but there might be a little iNbreeding.
