I'm heading up to Boom Lake this weekend for the first time (girlfriend has a cabin there) and she is going to let me do a little fishing. Any suggestions of how or where to fish it? What is the structure like on that lake as far as weeds/timber goes. Her cabin is in Bass lake and all I know about it is dark water. I would also like to know if a rumor I heard was right about some sort of tourney going on this weekend(9/18). Thanks for any information in advance!

Yes, there is a tourney going on, but don't sweat it. I've gone up to Boom, caught fish, and didn't know a tourney was happening until I got back to the launch. Boom and Rhine flowage and thunder are big enough to handle it. Get a good map, locate weed/ wood combo spots, and THROW ORANGE! Doesn't have to be all orange, just some. I've caught half of my fish from these waters. Weed condition varies by the spot. Some are dying, some are healthy. Alge bloom is thick as pea soup where the wind hits the shoreline. Throw hair, rubber, and some gliders, and you should do alright. Let me know how you do.

Very poor action this weekend, in fact, no action. I only fished for a total of 7 hours and didn't raise a fish. Instead of looking for cool looking spots I was basically looking for spots with no fisherman. From what I heard, not many people did have much luck on Saturday. I did see a lot of good looking structure and I'm sure I'll be back fishing again. I may have saved a life however, we towed a 12 ft log(tree) out from the middle of the ski course. The weather was not very favorable for fishing either, near 80 degrees, no clouds, no wind. I did have an enjoyable visit to the Rhinelander area anyways but I'm not sure about that hodag-at least why everyone loves it so much.
