| I hope a big front comes in and no fish are caught... Seriously though, every fish that I have seen in that lake is huge, so I expect some lucky stick entrant to walk away with the cash! Steve Edited by muskyboy 9/15/2004 10:58 AM | |||

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The weather broke absolutely NASTY today at the Simply Fishing Muskie Classic out of Tower, MN. Winds gusted blowing up seas to 4', rain fell sideways, and the big girls were cooperative. I am currently uploading the spreadsheet to Zach for the Live Leader Board, watch for that tomorrow with plenty of pictures from the show. I talked with Artie, Herbie, Steve Jonesi, Ty Sennet, Jason Long, GregM and Jomusky, and many more MuskieFIRST members. Jlong and Ty are in the hunt for the Friday cut, we will see what tomorrow and Friday bring. Here are a few pictures from the check in today, and the current standings. Hirsch and Benson are HOT!! Murph! and Erickson scored a nice fish, as did Luke and Ty. Polman and Augustine, a very familiar team, is in the hunt, as are Brickson and Graca. Jlong and Wojtusik have a legal, and are on other fish.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Day two of the Simply Fishing Muskie Classic on Lake Vermillion dawned very windy and cool, with temps in the upper 40's to low 50's. Forecast is for light winds by mid day, 6 to 12 MPH, broken clouds, and nice temps in the 60's. lt looks like South winds for tomorrow, the last day of qualifying before the cut, through at least Saturday and warming temps. The Big V will kick out some more impressive muskies before this is all over. Most of the muskies from yesterday were from the North end, as I understand it. I will clarify that and get what details I can about today, most of the anglers are pretty tight lipped. The 30 Saturday qualifying teams start over with a clean slate unless there are no fish caught, in which case the Saturday/Sunday cut to 10 teams will be determined by points from the qualifying leg. Here are a few shots from the morning. Look for the Live Leader Board coverage at 3:30 PM to 7 PM as the weights are called in from the judges. Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Day two ended with the same total number as day one, with one team doubling up. Interestingly, no one who caught fish on Day One caught fish today. The wind was constant today, but no where near as bad as yesterday. Many of the anglers I spoke with moved very few fish today. Bob M told me five of the eight fish caught came on the Solunar major, all at once. Temps were in the 60's, and the skies clear. Tomorrow should be warmer, with a few more clouds and a slight chance of showers. Who will make the First Cut? WHO will catch a fish tomorrow, making it to the Big game Saturday? Watch here!!! I will be shooting the check-in at the other dock site tomorrow, and will see if I can get a few pictures of the missing anglers...

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Actually, those shots are in Tournament Headquarters at Bay View Lodge, where the daily First Stage leaderboard is. Had a great dinner there tonight with Mr. Jonesi, and a bunch of diet Pepsi. Tomorrow, the pictures will be in the big top tent for the beginning of the Big Show, the cut to Saturday.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Day three dawned cool and windy with a front moving in from the West. It doesn't look like rain, but skies are clouding up as a front approaches. Temps are to be in the low 70's today. Many of the teams I talked to today intend to work fish they have seen the last two days trying to get one in the net and make the cut tomorrow. Most feel any legal will get the job done! Watch for Live Leader Board updates and coverage this afternoon starting about 4:30 PM. Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The bite today was tougher yet, but the fish quality absolutley FANTASTIC. Duberowski and Ryan boated a 52.25", only to be bettered by Schaeffer and Schaeffer boating an absolute slob of a 53"! There were only 6 fish boated today, so 19 teams wil move into the final elimination round tomorrow morning at 7 AM. Fishing for a top prize of $80000, an absolutely striking Champion ring, and the Simply Fishing Classic 2004 title the anglers who made the cut including Murph! and Jlong will probably not sleep well tonight. Watch the MuskieFIRST Live Leader Board tomorrow afternoon as the fish information comes in! Picture one is Jason long and Dan Wojtusik. Picture two is Jim Murphy and Bret Erickson. Picture three features the First Elimination round winners with a 51.75" and 49.75" pair of monsters, Fred Hirsch and Bob Benson. The photo album is up, take a look. We will be adding the top 19 teams making the 'cut' soon. http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/leaderboard/llb.asp?t=367&view=imag... | Steve, thanks for the live coverage which is really cool. I am totally against all musky tournaments, especially big money ones, but this top money test really points out how hard musky fishing is, and only a few teams made the cut. That doesn't mean the other teams aren't skilled, it just means it took luck and skill to make the cut! There is always luck involved in musky fishing no matter what people say. I said before the start that I have only seen giant muskies in that lake and the first three days proved it out. It is about time some giant muskies were caught to win a tournament, and that is what musky fishing is all about. Any musky is fun to catch but a tournament win should include some 50 inch plus fish on a lake like that! Best wishes to those who made the cut and may the best team win! Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Jason Long and Dan Wojtusik popped a 52.5" Big V monster to lock in his trip to the final day. without that fish, they would have been eliminated! The weather was classic cold front, with bluebird skies. It sounds like the fish were active, but not many got pined up and in the bag. Tim Widlacki and Jason Summers popped a 49 to guarantee the cut. Tomorrow is the big day! I will be out in the boats all day sghooting pictures, so watch for the fish entries at 4 PM! Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Only the top ten go on! Lot's of room to fish on the Big V today. Good luck to Jlong & Dan W & also Murph & Brett E. I really would like to see JLong & Brett E. pull this off. JLong is a thinking muskie fisherman.... I know he'll be thinking & fishing hard today! "Wahooooo! Fish on! Get the *&^%$# net!" Al.
