Location: Monee, Illinois | As you can see from my Webster/Tippy report I lost a big fish due to a leader clasp bending. What kind of leaders do you all use and is there any type that work better than others. I fish with heavy baits and leaders tend to bend or when I get a fish I have to change leaders after a while. I fish with jerk bait leaders mostly (Seem to have better action will all the lures). Some advice would be great. Also some people have talked about making home made leaders anyone done this if so how and what do you use.

| I started using Thorne Brothers seven and single strand leaders and I like them very much. I have also used others and have never had a failure like yours. Go with 90 to 125+ test metal leaders, and using single strand for your heavier baits.

Location: oswego, il | Did not read the reoprt yet but if you are using a heavy bait, use a heavy straight sire leader of at least .035 if not .043. You can use just a split ring instead of a snap or if you use a snap, I recommend a stayloc snap which has a failsafe in it. I make my own leaders so i can make them however I want. You can cut off the snap on your store bought leader and add either a split ring(bucher style works best for eyes) or put on a stayloc which can be put on an existing wire loop unlike a coatlock snap. | my buddy's been riding my case for awhile to switch to using split rings on my leaders instead of clasps. i would always say i'd never had any problems...until this week when a bad backlash straightened the clasp and sent a brand new $20 lure to the bottom.
i'm considering making the switch to split rings...just don't know if i can handle eating that much crow from him on it!
talk to Ranger about leaders - he makes (and sells) very nice ones in straight wire and fluoro.

| It use to be - the line was the weakest point out of a set up, not so today with the super lines. Many are finding out the snaps are now.
ToddM has it right, especially if you are using big baits and jerk baits. Get to know someone that will show you how to make those single strand leaders - they are by far the best way to go for big baits and jerks. It is also very cheap and if you get a kink - replace it! It cost just pennies and like ToddM said - you can make the any way you want - long/short, small loops/big loops, etc.
One side note - I seldom use swivels on baits that don't require them (baits that don't roll over) like Suicks, Bobbies, etc. They do (it seems) look better in the water that way. Some gliders do roll and do require a swivel and big cranks as well.

Location: Stevens Point, WI | For chucking big wood like a Wabull I use the Hellraiser Jerkbait leaders, very robust wire with the snap being part of the same wire as the leader. |

| I ONLY use leaders made by Wisher tackle from Girad IL and Ryan leaders which happen to be made by a steelworker. In just over ten years I have had only 1 Wisher leader fail and fortunatley it happened on a cast with a floating bait. Snap broke in half.. My fault as the leader was old and I knew I shoulda replaced it a while ago.. I almost never re-use a leader that has caught a fish unless it is still in very good shape.. Since I mostly use stiff wire leaders once its bent it is replaced. If your snaps are black one thing to do is watch for wear.. the one that broke on me had a ton of wear..

| Alot of guys out here make their own leaders including myself. I actually dont like (trust) store bought leaders any more. I use single strand leaders with split rings to attach the lure. |

| PGA we here in the North {Canada /Georgian Bay] World Cup Hockey Champs and the Olympics Men and Womens] use strictly Flourocarbon Leaders now
We use the 150 lb Seaguar Floro leader material and the crimpers 1.5b size, we also burn the end of the leader after you put the leader into the sleeve thereby eliminating any chance of slipping thru the sleeve, also be careful not to burn the leader which would weaken the leader for sure, you only have to touch the heat to the leader end to do this and make it mushroom out. We also use split rings and never ever have failures, the reson we went to this is the clear water and these setups are used for sharks,tuna. billfish,barracuda ,marlin etc
You can make these in the boat in seconds and they are the best leaders going. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | Its mixed for me when I change them. Usually after having caught a fish on one.. But if it starts to noticeably get worn looking(bent, snap discolored, etc..) I'll also change it then. |
