Posts: 7039 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Does anyone know when the salmon will be up in the harbors this fall? Had a blast with Luke_Chinewalker and Kly last fall (EARLY) and want to plan on some times to hit them again. Any clue here?

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | By Labor Day weekend Salmon are usually in the Milwaukee River. Which means by the last to the second to the last weekend of August you can be trolling the entire harbor from behind Summerfest to under the Hoan Bridge. This all depends on water temps and flow of the river. Usually a good cool rain during mid to later August will push fish into the river. I used to troll it alot with boards and deep diving Thundersticks, Wally Divers, Shad Raps, Husky Jerks and Tail Dancers. You can find them from 7' on down. Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | The salmon were stacked in front of the Manitowoc harbor last week for a few days until the northeast winds rolled warm water in. We are talking 15-30 fish per trip and mainly 3 and 4 year olds. The feed bags are still on for another couple of weeks and then they are done. I heard that Sheboygan was the same way. Dumper Dan and his crews were doing some major damage on the kings down there. Normally you can mark your calendar for August 23rd for the big boys. At this time of year, water temp means squat. These fish have one thing on their minds and that is it. They are ticked off and ready to go. They are done feeding, but hit on instinct and pure aggression. Their stomachs are tight and not "feeding" any longer. They stack up and are easily taken at this time of year. I did an article with Dave Mull for Great Lakes Angler magazine a few years ago on small boat salmon fishing and he became a true believer that water temps are not a factor at this time of year. Our 10 fish limit of well over 200lbs of fish running 6 lines out of my 16' Smoker Craft 161 ProMag is all it took. Oh yeah, water temps were running 65 degrees from top to bottom in 15'-25' of water. I got onto this temp thing many, many moons ago. Working on and running a charter for 13 years and fishing the pond for the past 28 years there are certain patterns that show up and stay true for the majority of the time. First, be sure to have J-Plugs, Fast Track Rebels, Pro Kings and Evil Eyes along. For the J's stick with lime green, glow green, "hot lips"(Luhr Jensens Cut Plug color, silver with red lips area) and pearl. If you can still find the black ladder or black dot with a white back and silver belly, GET THEM!! For Fast Tracks, give me my "ghost"(white or bone with an orange belly), black ladder/white/silver, black dot/white/silver and I will be set for these. Pro Kings and Evil Eyes should be heavy in glow patterns as well as lime green. "Tequilla"(orange/chart w/silver bolt) Evil Eye is a killer also glow/lime. Red/chart w/black dots Pro King is also a killer and make sure you have glow/lime scale, glow w/red ladder and glow w/black ladder. The 33 1/2 pounder on the wall in front of me and the 35 pounder to my left on the wall as I sit here on the computer really gets the itch back in me. Boating 11 kings, 1 10 pound coho and 1 small laker a couple of days ago does not hurt either. I will be making a couple trips back to Manitowoc this fall to spank a few of these fish. Did it last year though but it stunk only being able to fish for 5 1/2 hours total the whole weekend. Legally could only do that as my daughter and I had our 10 fish limit in 2 1/2 hours one evening and our 10 fish limit the next morning in 3 hours. Sorry for the rambling, but you got me fired up and ready to chase these things RIGHT NOW! Still have my captains license, will never get rid of that, maybe I will start running 1 and 2 person charters in the fall on weekends? God, I can't waite to get back there in a couple of weeks, but they will have to waite until I get done with the Minaki musky starting on Saturday. Chuck PS: If anyone has any white/pearl/bone colored Fast Tracks with the orange belly in the jointed models and you are not using them, let me know as I am interested in purchasing them.

Posts: 341 | Slamr, My Tuffy is all set up for salmon. I was thinking of going 8/28 or the 29th. I've been having some luck launching out of Waukegan harbor. Let me know.
