10 years ago when my wife bought me an airbrush for Christmas, I had no idea what I was going to do with it. Now she can't keep me out of the garage.
Cady, send me those blanks for the auction. I haven't been in the garage for 2 days and I'm suffering from withdrawls.
You know things are bad when the guy who owns the hobby shop wants to sell you paint in larger quantities.

Beav,
Those paint jobs are unbelievable. How long did it take you to get that good?
Very nice work.

I had the airbrush for years, but in the beginning, I mainly did fancy paint jobs on lead head jigs.
Then I strted to do some Suicks.....seems to me a guy in Rhinelander wanted some blue Suicks, so I bought Suicks out of a sales bin and attacked them with a wire wheel, then sanded them rounder like they used to be made. I didn't do much fancy stuff, just two or three and sometimes four colors overlapping. Kind of a sunburst pattern.
Then I moved on to Beaverturds, again very basic.
Recently I got into some better paints. Better quality pearls and metalflakes. The hardest part was finding the right mesh for scaling. The stuff I have I found by accident. The rest has just been trial and error. Finding what colors blend best with what. And what layers well. It's suprising what happens when you put one color over another. Some good and some just plain ugly!
It's fun, but it takes a lot of time and experimenting.
The Envirotex makes the difference. The lures before Envirotexing are very plain and blah, add the Envirotex and they jump to life. Add some gltter to the Envirotex and it gets better....sometimes.
I have a pic of a couple that just came off the turner this morning.
I also got some topwater bodies that I'm going to turn into gliders. Weighting them individually and going through the whole process takes a long time. I will NEVER complain about how much a lures costs. From scratch, to sand sealing, weighting, reweighting, unweighting, sanding some more, drilling holes, filling holes, priming, painting, adding eyes,clearcoating...twice,hanging hooks........even making minimum wage, I don't know how guys make quality lures for $20. I couldn't do it. Painting is the fun part, the rest IS work.

Hawaiis best blanks. The way they came, they run a foot or so deep, like a ReefHawg. I left 5 that way, and weighted the other 5.
Now I have 10 of his shad shaped surface lures that I'm going to turn into gliders. I was figuring out the weighting last night.
The fish in my daughter's aquarium will never be the same!
I'll have to use one just as an experiment. I had them sinking so slowly last night that they hovered on the way down. I have to take in the weight of the Envirotex into the equation and see what I have to do.
Once I get it figured out, I'll get some more blanks from him.

As a lure-builder myself I can very much relate to what you were saying about the cost of baits. There is a ton of work that goes into each bait but I think musky fisherman more than anything understand this. I guess this is why so many companies have gone to plastic and to overseas producers, it's the only way you can make a bait for 5 bucks.

Those are some beautiful lures and it is very true that some can paint, others cannot.

WOW Beave...amazing stuff.

If I sent you a Cobbs RoundNose Countdown, could you turn it into a Green Bay Packer's/Perch theme?

Alan, send me an e-mail.
I've never done any that I charged for.
Suicks will be easy to paint, and I like to reshape them to the way that they used to look in the '50's..... More rounded. Tough to Envirotex because of the metal tail.
I'll have to use a different clearcoat.
GMG, same for you, send me an e-mail. We can discuss it.
I'm sure that I can pull off a green and gold pattern with a G for the eye outline.
We'll have to talk it over.
I love doing this, but don't want it to turn into a job. At least not for 6 more years, when I retire!!!!

Beaver,
You can envirotext them suicks.Tape the tail with masking tape, let the envirotext tack up a little before applying with a disposible brush.keep turning it and try to get as little on the tail as possible. The tape will come right off and you will have a clean tail,I'v done it plenty give it a try.IMHO it's better to put on one coat only. The bait will have a hard finish to help from sinking teeth, but allows the hooks to wear thru.I like this so they take on a little water, and for some reason the text never cracks like it does on other lures.give it a try.
