Anyone have an idea for a wooden lure coating that is not shiny or glossy when dry? Something with a matte finish that is waterproof and will hold up?

Ideas?

I've taken lures that I've coated with Evvirotex and sanded them down with 00 steelwool to get rid of the shine.
Actually I was doing it to touch up some yellowing spots for repainting, but the steelwool took the shine right out of the lure.

that could help, it's my experience that low-gloss lacquers are a lot softer and weaker than the shiny ones. Rubbish if you ask me. Try sanding the lacquered surface with fine abrassives (grain 400 or 800) so you get rid off the gloss but in the water you'll still have the flash of the painted pattern, though it will be somewhat duller.
