Posts: 265 Location: Manitowish Waters WI | Two nights ago I was out fishing on the Manitowish Chain for the evening bite. It was around 8:00 and I noticed a boat coming across the lake towing a wakeboarder. The boat zipped past me within 200 feet. He was close enough to see me pointing at my watch. For those of you don't know the town of Manitowish Waters has an ordinance that states no PWCs or towing recreation after 7:00. Island Lake and Wild Rice are the exception because they are in Bolder Junction. The boat continued to haul wakeboarders for the next half hour. My partner thought it would be a good idea to let them know they where operating past hours but I don't like confronting people about things like that. When making a move to another spot I saw the boat at 8:45, no lights, in the middle of the lake changing out wakeboarders. This burned me. A young girl died in Rest lake last year from a severed limb because people failed to follow rules like this. I pulled up next to the guy and politely let him know he was over a hour and a half past towing time and it would be a good idea to turn his lights on. The guy immediately got frustrated and said " I'm just trying to get my 5th grade son up wake boarding here". What looked like the guys other teenage son stated there arnt even any other boats on the lake but fisherman. My partner got upset and let the kid know that's because people respect the laws and they should to. I decided it was a good time to leave before someone blew their top over this. So would you have made the call and reported it or left it be?

Posts: 200 Location: Minnesota | I would have called an reported it as soon as I saw it. Confronting them is best left to the sheriff. Besides, just think if someone had called the sheriff and he shut them down last year on Rest Lake. That little girl would still be alive.

Posts: 150 Location: Central Minnesota | Unfortunatly we live in a world that is no longer capable of accepting when we are at fault. People become so defensive even when they know they are doing wrong. This guy should have known the rules or thanked you for telling him but instead got angry. I dont think you were wrong in approaching this guy but I have learned it is best just to call the authorities and let them deal with it. Good luck fishing

Posts: 293 | I would have called it in, but at the same time I've called in numerous occurrences like this including a guy buzzing within about 30 feet of me going 60+ mph, and never had anything get responded to...I've also called in 3 tagged fish this year, and never received a response....so I'm not really sure what the wi dnr really does anymore.

Posts: 706 Location: Richland Center, WI. | One thing is for sure, if you call it in, you have a chance that someone will come and check it out. If you don't call it in, you can be sure it will not be checked out! I happen to have a job where people will complain about something that happened last night or the night before and they expect you to fix the problem. So much easier when you get contacted when the problem starts rather than two days later. If I don't fix the problem when it is occurring, then it becomes MY problem and I have some 'splaining to do! Posts: 309 | I think what you did probably had more of an impact than calling it in, and more people should do what you did. Idiots seem to get a little shocked when a stranger respectfully tells them they are being an idiot. They'd likely have laughed off a warning from the authorities.
