Location: Holly, MI | I was casting the other night and following another boat around a shoreline (my buddy). He hit a cove pretty hard with 3 people in his boat all casting different stuff. After he moved out and away I moved in to give it a shot. I put on my home made upside down perch glider. I know that he doesn't even have any glider/pull baits in his box and was probably pitching hair and crankbaits. I dripped a little Dr Juice pike/musky scent oil on the glider and chucked it out into the cove and started walking it back. It was only about 4-6 inches under the surface and on about the fourth or fifth pull I got to watch a big swing and a miss by about a low 40's ski. Threw up a nice lot of water on the toilet flush but no connection. I stopped the lure for a few seconds and then proceeded to work it back in with a little more zip but she was done for the time being.
Did I show this fish somthing different? Did the scent have anything to do with it? Just timing?
I had one more follow in the same area about 2 hrs later but again no hookup. Relaesed one small pike about 24 inches that took an 8 inch Crane (thanks Stan Durst for the Electric Autumn) that I was twitching.
The only other Muskie I saw all night was close to sundown in about 3 ft of very clear water. I was casting off the bow and we snuck up on it. It slowly swam off from only a couple of feet in front of the boat. Didn't seem to scared from our approch but wasn't sticking around. Is this fish worth targeting at that time or will it not be looking for my lures? I of course fired a handfull of casts in front of the direction she went, was a big fish, but to no avail. Should I have waited until later to target this fish or cast immediatly? |
