| I'll be in Eagle River area in Aug. and am looking for a lake with good Muskie & Smallie populations. I plan to fish muskies on the bookends and Smallies with the family in between.
I have been pointed to Butternut Lake and was wondering if there were other recommendations or comments re:Butternut.
Thanks for any info you care to share. |

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Twitch, Butternut in Forrest Co isn't a Musky lake, smallies and northerns, but no gators.
Northern limit is 32" and possession is 1, I believe. Trolling is allowed out there, so that should tell you that it is'nt a Musky water.
Awsome walleye night bite too...gin clear lake. I caught my largest smallie out there jigging for walleyes during oening weekend 3 years ago....22.5". Joe Bucher does alot of his Smallie filming on Butternut for his shows.
Cruise over to North and South Twin to look for some decent Muskie fishing.

Location: Downers Grove | I was on the Eagle River Chain last week and we landed 2 muskies in 3 days. Low 30 inches nothing big but still a great time. We saw in the upwards of about 25 fish though. Most of the action was trggerd by the #*^@ mata . my new favorivte bait. We had most of our luck on Watersmeet Lake. and the river between watersmeet and yellowbirch... Cool bunch of lakes up there. We talked to a bunch of guys and they said the bite was on at Kentuck.... jsut south of butternut on the other side of 70...... Who knows about un august thouse.. He said Kentuck generally produce larger muskies in the summertime. hope this helps you........ brian

| If you want a lake with both, try Kentuck. I've had some 50 fish days over there. Big muskies too. Just smallies.....Franklin and Anvil are both good and not far from Eagle River.
If you're going to go as far as Phelps to fish the Twins, keep going on Hwy 17 for about 10 more minutes ang go fish Big Sand. You can fish milfoil edges all day on that lake, and catch pike and bass too.
