Posts: 827 Location: Minneapolis,Minnesota | Saturday I caught a new Minnesota state record and a possible line class world record on Lake Bemidji. The fish was released after a couple pics and swam off strong. It hit a red, white and blue raddog spinnerbait off a deep reed edge. The fish wasn't registered but was just released back into Lake Bemidji to give the next musky angler that hooks up with her a thrill. Describing the fish wouldn't do it justice, I will post pics as soon as Papa Joe sends them to me tomorrow. She's a true giant!!!!

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | Assuming this was a Muskie... How long was she and what was her girth? The state record Muskie is 54 lbs so she would have had to have been around 57x28 or so to beat that. That is from using the (girth*girth*length/800 = weight) formula. Although, it might have to be longer than 57 inches since 27 inches is an incredible girth this time of year for even a fish that long. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. But even if she was 45 lbs and not quite a record, it was a gigantic fish and quite an accomplishment. Good job and much thanks for letting her go so the rest of us have a chance at her some day. Posts: 285 | PK, We are retartded. The whole gag would have worked better if I could have gotten you the pic of the HUGE rock bass. Still trying to figure out how to open the dang compact flash card, and will send it to you as soon as I can. Also, we should have gotten a girth measurement and a weight! later, papa joe

Posts: 437 | That is hilarious! Bemidji has some GIANT rock bass. I went to BSU and my freshman year there I caught one from the pier that I know was a record. No one that I was with would believe me (the record at the time was just shy of two pounds) and I really didn't want my name recognized as the rock bass fisherman and all the fame Oh, well, what could have been! LOL

Posts: 639 Location: Bloomington, MN | I personally like Rock Bass! If you really thought it was over the 2 lb state record, you should of registered it. There is nothing to be ashamed of to claim a state record fish, no matter the specie (I'm working on a 16 lb. Bowfin). Please post a picture of the happy, yet cantankerous dock dwelling wee beastie that has a mean streak a mile wide. They're fun for the whole Fam Damily!

Posts: 148 Location: DES MOINES, IOWA | I agree. My gramps use to take me Rock Bass fishing when I was a kid, and on light line they were a ball to catch. Not Musky fishing, but definitely a feisty fish that,s fun to catch.Kind of surprised the record is only 2#,s, because I know there should be some 3-4 pounders out there.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Don't even SAY Rock Bass around Sue, or I will be fishing them for sure. She loves atching those almost as much as she loves crappies, which is alot...

| The record is higher now, I believe closer to 3 pounds. I really didn't want all the glitz, glamour, fame and fortune to come with catching a state record fish, especially a rock bass. Well, OK, I didn't want to keep getting crap from my buddies because they didn't believe me in the first place. Oh well, it was such a beautiful fish, I wanted it to be released to fight another day and keep the genes in the lake. | |||

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | I caught a couple Rock Bass over two lbs in the Crow river in central MN when I was a kid. It wasn't until years later that I learned they would have broken the state record. The tasted great though.

Posts: 382 | This past winter at the Brainerd Jaycees Ice fishing contest I landed a 0.87lb rock bass that won me a $400 ice shack. There not so bad after all. Also have caught the same ones multiple times IN THE SAME DAY ice fishing! Weird fish!
