when do you use these and how do you fish them? I'm talking about jointed believers, shallowraiders, ... I have a few but they fail to even produce a following pike. Perhaps the jointed 13 from rapala has passed its highlight by now. I haven't caught a single fish on them since 1995. And it's not because I don't give them a chance.

I personally prefer jointed lures vs. unjointed. They always have a little more action, and most of my fish have come off jointed crank baits. The J-13 rapala has been one of my best, strange that you havne't caught anything. Try trolling it or reeling it in fast. The clown color has caught me a couple. I've got the blue one too but haven't had the chance to use it too much. Many jointed crankbaits make a clacking noise, like a believer or depthraider for instance, I think that adds something extra to attrack the fish. Maybe it doesn't? Sounds strange if you've caught stuff on unjointed but not jointed, I personally buy the jointed version of everything, if there is a jointed version.

I like jointed lures for darker water systems especially, and at night, and also for the reasons Handyman mentioned. I've also seen where fish in certain lakes really come to them, so try them wherever you go. They are also a good tool if you do not like to twitch, as they have really good action on the straight retrieve.

I see jointed lures as a straight retrieve or a slow trolling lure. I like to pull and pause or twich crankbiats so I tend to throw the straight ones. That's just my preference. Pops has had some follows on hid jointed depth raiders as of late.

I think you can use jointed lures any time! They work great under cold water conditions when you might want to try to slow down your retrieve a little, they still create a ton of action while moving at slow speeds. Dark water and at night they sometimes will out produce a straight bait witch could be from the extra noise they produce.

Not tomention that if your jointed bait is a shallow runner, like a believer, it will make a great surface bait.[:)]

yes, I've tried it too. a J-13, and a jointed 8" swim whizz. Great action and wake but no strikes.
