Subject: Question about Downeast Rod Holders

I have an 1860C Crestliner (it is a utility like a Lowe Roughneck), and I am looking to install some rod holders on the boat. I would like to put on hand rails, but I haven't figured how to do that. The other option is the Salty series Downeast clamp on holders. In the pictures of the holders, however, it does not look like they will clamp together close enough to attach to my boat (.100" thick). They are not available locally so I can't see them in person. Can anyone who uses these holders tell me if they will work with this type of boat? Any other advice would also be appreciated.

Thanks

I have the clamp on holders that I use on my Ranger. They are mounted on the rails and a board I customizes to hold my downriggers and rod holders when fishing big water.

I have 4 of the holders that clamp on the rail and 4 that clamp on the wood. Rail mounts work great for boats that will not accept the clamp on type. You can order the rail mounts from any of the major catalog companys.

If you look through some of my pictures on my web site you will see the rod holders and the wood design I use.

Down East is the best holder for the money and will last forever. They are also the easest to get a rod out of when you get that strike. Just lift straight up. Sometimes you might have to take the load off the rod by bending the rod back to straight and lift up.

When the rod is loaded up with weight it can be hard to lift out, this will also keep the rod in the holder when a fish hits it. No chance for failure with this holder.

You can use a spacer made out of plywood on the inside of the boat. Get the double clamp model in the new powder coat finish ( this will prevent them from being sticky).

yeah thats what i did with my crestliner. sounds like the same rails. used spacer chunks of plywood on the inside of the boat. i have double clamps so they can be moved around. but it works well.

Capt Frank has good advice about the powder coated ones if you can afford them. The non-coated ones get sticky/hard to open and close after time. They all are great however.
