Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin |
I just returned from a mini vacation with the wife muskie fishing where we got totally soaked in our 'old' rain gear. I am looking into Gander or Cabelas. Please advise me as to the best stuff for simply summer use. i wouldn't mind stuff that we could convert to fall use by adding a zip in liner, though i already have bowhunting gear. Luckily the fishing was better than the weather the past few days in North East WI, but the times the muskies wanted to go(night) was when the deluge forced us to retire to our almost-as-wet-tent. I just cannot find the thread from about a month ago talking about the rain gear, and would like one more recommendation before we order this week.
| ||

Posts: 561 Location: Monee, Illinois | The best rain gear going is made my Foot Joy. Foot Joy is a golf company. They make the best rain gear, the dry joy line is the best. It will keep you dry and also keep you cool if need be or keep you warm if that is the case. I know its not fishing "gear" but IT IS THE BEST AND worth every penny. I use the stuff all the time. I am a golf professional and if you have any question on the Foot Joy rain selection let me know. Thanks, PGASCHULZ

Posts: 4266 | Check out www.sierratradingpost.com I got Columbia raingear for myself and my wife at half price. They don't always have raingear on their on-line store, but I've bought Columbia and 10X raingear from them for hunting and fishing. Goretex/thinsulate and just regular unlined Goretex. I also carry an exta set of Frogg Toggs in my boat for back up. That stuff is definitely summer only. Feels wierd, but keeps you dry and also can serve as a windblocking outer layer. Beav

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I have Walls stuff myself, its called "Walls Water Pruf" I got it at Gander a couple years back. The Frogg Toggs look like they'd be great for summer and the one guy I saw with them said he was dry.

Posts: 3926 | I'll give you some general advice. From one who lives in rain gear, all the way up untill ice prevents access to thhe waters.... Don't buy anything but Gortex. Neoprean cuffs will keep you sleeves and so forearms dry. Velcro is a must to lock it down. Don't buy insulated, too hot in summer, you can always add thin layers of wool as it gets chilly. Get a good hood system, one that allows covering your mouth/nose as you run through the rain. Hood must be attached, screw the attachable hood systems, you'll get wet. Bibs must have suspenders, buy 'em long so they cover your boots as you drive down the lake/river. Cuffs must cover the tops of your feet as you sit, not stand. Buy neutral colors, light green, sky blue and light tan. Bright colors spook fish and call bugs. Never buy black, you'll cook between rain/sun. Staying dry means staying warm. You'll appreciate it when you are fishng in sleets/rain/snow. Don't buy chaep stuff. You may need to spend an unplaned wet night out sometine in your gortex shell. Plan to spend around $200-300 to get the bottom of the line of good quality grear. Get good boots and excellent socks. Plan on carrying an insulated gortex cap with ear flaps. Keep your ass dry, from head to toe, and you will stay warm.

Posts: 189 Location: Barrington, Il | By far the best raingear I have found is the Cabelas Guidewear. I have worn the bibs in torrential downpours, snow storms and freezing rain and have never gotten wet. When looking for a top, consider the jacket and not the parka. The parka can impede casting. | As an all-around, save-your-butt, save-your-wallet, stay dry, rain option, I love my Frogg Toggs. Super light, stuffs anywhere. Bought mine for $60 @ BPS. And you will be dry. If you need warmth, wear layers underneath. I have the model with bibs and jacket. Great stuff. Feels like some type of kevlar envelope intended for documents. Don't let that deter you. They're great!

Posts: 110 Location: Albertville, Minnesota | I agree with Gander Mt Guide, the coat and bibs are nice, espesially for the price. I got the blue outfit. It breathes well, keeps you warm, keeps you dry and a bunch of pockets to keep your digital camera or whatever dry also. Chris

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | This needs to be emphasized more: Buy neutral colors, light green, sky blue and light tan. Bright colors spook fish and call bugs. Never buy black, you'll cook between rain/sun Gray is another good color..afterall, whats the sky usually look like when its raining? If you fish shoreline areas with lots of trees darker greens are not too bad, but as Ranger mentioned dark=hot, uninsulated or not. Bright colors... I was told by a giude that my brother was gonna get dropped off at shore if he did not take off the Safety Yellow Rain Parka..... so my bro pulls out a blaze orange one..lol.... the guide didn't think it was funny..lol... Once the yellow was gone the following fish came all the way too the boat.... was enough to convince me.
