Is it possible to catch bass on musky lures? I read that fish can consume half of their size, so wouldn't a big bass be able to strike a 6" crank or a small bucktail? My own experience is that most bass swim away from my lures although I have had a few follows on a Jr. Musky bucktail.

I've caught some of my biggest walleyes and a few bass throwing for Muskies.

29.5" Walleye on a bucktail, 27" Walleye on a Dancin' Shad....

Last weekend I caught a 3-4 pound bass on a 6" Phantom....

There are alot of bass caught on musky baits. I popped a 5 lb largemouth prefishing a WMT event this year, and a 3 lber prefishing another event. Both of those fish hit Undertakers. Pretty big bass baits.

They also looooove bucktails in the summer.

I nailed a 21+" and a 17" on a jointed Baby Depth Raider on back to back casts fishing the WMT on Pewaukee lake a few weeks ago.

Like a few other guys here, I've seen a few 26-28" walleyes hitting 10" Jakes.

Bigger baits for bigger fish

My experience catching bass on muskie lures reinforces my belief in the big bait/big fish theory. I've caught ten or so bass over 5lbs in my life, and only two have come while bass fishing. The rest were on muskie lures. I catch bigger overall bass while muskie fishing than I do bass fishing.

Last Sunday I had 4 boys in my boat fishing a kids tourny, the kids wanted to win first place(biggest fish) so we worked 6-inch Slammers and Baby Shallow Raiders. We caught and released 15 bass that were over 14-inches. Most of the bass were in the 16 to 17-inch range. A pike was the biggest fish at 30 1/2-inches.

I wanted the boys to score plenty of fish so we worked the smaller sized muskie baits.

I have boated 6 bass over 20-inches this year on muskie baits.

This past weekend while fishing on Lake Tippecanoe, I had the biggest bass I've ever seen alive, try to inhale my Jackpot. It came flying out of the water (cleared the surface by 2'), and made a large splash....totally missing my lure. My brother Tom saw it and there was silence for a few moments.....we both knew it was a bass, but it was WAY to be big to really be a bass.

But it obviously was. It was a freak of a large mouth. How big?? State Record size possibly....seriously. I say around 10-12 pounds. 28-30" long. No crap.

The funny thing is, the very next cast, I hooked a 32-34" musky....same exactly spot. I let it shake off. Funny that a bass and a musky were living in the same hole.....the jumping bass perhaps drew the musky up and got her interested. Who knows.

But missing that bass really sucked!!! I hate bass, but that would have been one to catch.

I catch huge smallmouth 19"-21" on large bucktails/ twitch baits quite frequently while muskie fishing. In fact if I am smallie fiashing and they aren't biting I will switch to those larger bait and usually connect.

brother steve, i found that state record bucket mouth to be: 14 lb. 12 oz. Lake,
Harrison County Jenifer Schultz 1991 . When Steve and i saw the bass come out of the water, i wanted to say that's the biggest bass, but i didnt want him to think i was crazy when i said he just missed a 10 pound large mouth. Biggest bass i have even seen in IN.
I catch plently 8" bass on 9" baits. i caught a bass last weekend on jack pot and i didnt even twitch it one yet. cast it, let it sit there and adjusted my reel. as the bait just laid there, a bass ate it.

Bass on muskie plugs / cranks / glide baits seems obvious, and spinnerbaits are only a step up from common bassin' technique, but I got the biggest bass of my life on the classic brass & black bucktail. I had declined a chance to sign up for a bass contest when I rented a boat from Gale Radtke on Little Green Lake years ago -- and that fish would have won it. What are the odds?

OK, I'll tell one: out with Mauser last week, he's throwing his 9" sledge and yells 'fish on'. Yeah, bass-fish! "Mikie, I dunno why I can't catch muskies, all I get are these durn bass." Within 20 minutes he's unhooking a 34.
I got quite a few smallies on LOTW last year on muskie spinner baits. During the Cave Run spring outings, where larger bass baits are used, we were catching bass and catfish. Just no muskies. go figgure. m

Just one of the little perks for throwing big hardware: My 3 best bass last year came on bucktails & a musky spinnerbait. We guessed the spinnerbait fish to weigh 6#. Partner then pulled a 34" musky from nearly the same spot.

Conversely, I also caught a 10" SM on a Tallywacker. "A" for attitude!

You want huge bass..? Call SWorrall and get a few of their Violent Strike Spinner Baits... The larger ones with the grub tail trailer...

I can't catch a musky on one to save me fanny...:) but in the last two seasons I've had 3 smallmouth over 20" and several in the 18"-20" range...

You are getting good information from all the posts. Generally you will catch nice sized bass, but like an earlier post said every once in awhile you will get a small one with alot of attitude. I caught one on a big Suick last summer bringing it over a milfoil edge. It crushed the Suick and put up a good battle on 50 lb Tuf Line. But remember the converse is true that you can catch good muskies on bass baits.

My dad and myself have both caught our biggest larg and smallmouths while fishing musky. Mine have been caught on an ernie and a rizzo whizz copy, while my dads have been caught on a bagley top gun and bagley monster had. My dad did better than me his smallie was 6.75 and his largemouth was 7lbs.

While fishing muskie with an eight inch Hawg Wobbler over shallow rocks, I hooked a nice smallmouth. There was a storm approaching and I was in "last cast mode"as lightning could be seen a few miles west. As soon as the bait hit the water, the surface exploded and the fight was on. It was the biggest one I've ever caught - 18.5 inches. Every year while fishing for muskies, I also catch a few big largemouth bass - 18 inches plus.

Funny thing is, I caught my biggest tiger muskie (39") and one of my biggest muskies on a weighted five inch floating rapala speed trolling for walleye!

Bigger bait, bigger bass? How big will the fish be this year that takes my new custom 17 inch topwater?!

My brother was testing a home painted 7 1/2 inch jointed Muskie trolling bait, casting it and landed a 25 inch Largemouth! Where are the pictures Jeff? Get me the hard copy I can get it on here.

I have caught Largemouth on Musky Spinnerbaits, Jointed Grandma's and Smitty Flaptails.. a few have been nice bass(4-5lbs), most have been about the size of the baits they hit or just slightly larger(1.5lbs or less).. I have many follow baits to the boat but not hit.. Wish you could have caught that monster Steve... sounds like a heck of a fish.. I do know there are some monster bass that almost seem like they shouldn't be in those lakes.. I know of 2 Largemouth over 9 lbs that the DNR brought up about a 100 yards apart on Webster while doing their netting survey years back... Both were released successfully after being weighed and measured... I also know of a 27" Bass caught on Kuhn, sadly that fish was on its last legs when it hit the guys bait and only weighed 4-5lbs which for a bass that big is pretty light..

Since I fish the Madison chain primarily we typically get quite a few big bass, especially in Sept when the muskies and the big bass like big spinnerbaits. In 2002 I had I think 7 over 20 in September in the boat. Also caught them on SUPER topraiders too...

Topper Stopper got me a nice big largemouth on Minnetonka.

Also, I caught a great big walleye on Big Lake, with Duck during the 2002 Cass Lake trip, using a Musky Treat. It was almost 29" and probably 8 pounds. So if you have a Musky Treat gathering dust maybe move it over to your walleye box.

Later,
