Posts: 2024 | Well, I was going to get both a Mepps No. 5 and a Buchertail 500 for LOTW (6/26-7/3) to use as burning baits/search baits, thinking being that I'd be able to stick a couple even if they are little fellas. However, my memory didn't bring its A-game last night and I only got a Mepps No. 5 in black/hot firetiger. How do you like this bait as a fish catcher, search bait, and burning bait? I also just got a 7000 C3 to put these baits to the test, which I am excited about (sort of... not too excited about the nearly 18 oz. weight). Should I pick up a Buchertail at maybe a Fleet Farm on the way up? Are there other burning bucktails you'd recommend? Thanks much!

Posts: 3926 | I like the Mepps when conditions warrent, but gerenrally don't like throwing small bucktails. Mepps black and black is my fav combo. Certainly don't throw them with a big rig, I use an Ambassadeur 4500 on a somewhat whippy 7' rod to throw the little fellas. My bread and butter is the Buchertail 700 series, on a designated bucktail rod. If I were to take 3 of them fishing, they would be: black w/ silver blade, perch w/ copper blade and purple w/ firetiger blade.

Any Mepps, with an exception of the Mepps Marabou, make great burning baits. My personal favorite is a Giant Killer. It's heavier which allows farther casts and can be worked deeper because of the blade and weight. Edited by CiscoKid 6/11/2004 7:30 AM

Posts: 132 Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | In terms of body construction, the Buchertail is a much more solidly built bait; however, all of Bucher's bucktails in recent years have had one recurring problem again and again, and that is VERY poor tail longevity. I've had this problem, and so have several other people I know. The thread quickly gets cut by teeth and begins to unravel - then the tail disintegrates. I had purchased a trio of their flathead spinnerbaits, and all three were badly damaged by the very first fish that I caught on each bait. Either the thread is too light, or the epoxy coating needs to be applied in a substantially more significant way. Mepps baits have only one small flaw, and it can be readily fixed... remove the factory split ring and insert a much heavier one (at least two sizes bigger). Their tails stand-up quite well, and they definitely catch fish. They're light enough to make burning and casting for hours relatively simple and painless. Although I've not used the Musky Candy models, I've heard some really great things about them consistently from a lot of anglers and guides. Regards,

Hands down they just catch fish and can be interchanged with any tail or blade just by switching the ends. All you need is a few different blade colors and tail colors and interchange them for the different conditions.

Last year on the Angle out of our camp I think about 70% of the muskies caught were on either a Mepps Musky Killer, Magnum Or Marabou. They are reliable, the blade spins every time, versatile like Mike said by swapping blades and tails around, and they flat out catch fish.
