I'll be heading to Lower Buckhorn this weekend for the Ontario Muskie
opener. Any tips?? I will most likely be trolling, what speed would be
best? Any suggestions for the type of plugs I should be using??
I'm a novice musky fisherman, so I dont know a whole lot about these
fish...

I know nothing about Lower Buckhorn but will be casting and trolling on the same opener on Lake St Clair. Back up a page or two and look under the section on "Pro Prespectives" then click the post on "First time troller" <--lots of good info there. I'm no pro by any means but do put a few fish in the boat trolling. I'll be running mostly the 6-8 inch jointed trolling baits from 3-6 mph. I'll start slow and speed up as the day goes on. The baits I'm talking about are: Termonatiors, Wileys, Drifter Musky stalkers, Cranes, Believers, Swim Whizzes, etc. I have a new 10 oz trolling spinnerbait from Canada that will also see some time in the water. You can troll spoons also but be sure to have good swivles. Have a blast and CPR a hog.

I've been fishing Lower Buckhorn for about 23 years. It is a great numbers lake with some fish in the mid to upper 40 inch range as well. I've never fished it during the opener, but I have fished it in Mid to Late June as well as July, August and September. I would concentrate on the weedbeds in 6-12 feet of water. You can troll big spinnerbaits over the weeds and this time of year they won't be up too high. You can also try shallow running cranks like the Wiley Musky King or Believers on the shallow setting. If you are goint to cast try bucktails such as Mepps Musky Killer, Mepps Giant Killer, Windel's Musky Harrasser or Blue Fox Super Vibrax. Good Places to try would be Black Duck Bay, the large weedbed in front of Beachwood Resort that extends out toward the islands and any place you can find shallow weeds. This lake has clear water so I'd advise using dark colors/natural colors. You will definitely catch muskies on this lake if you fish hard for a week. Good fishing and let us know how you did when you get back.

Here's what I got this weekend! It's my first muskie. The fish measured
44"Length and 17"Girth. I caught it right in front of Beachwood Resort!
Thanks for all the help gents!! I can say that I am hooked on musky fishing
now!! BTW, the fish was caught "accidentally" on a white grub and jig combo,
using 6lbs "shogun" mono with no leader. I was killing time on the dock and
this beast nailed the jig as it was falling. My buddies fired up the boat and
we chased the fish because I was running out of line....what a rush!!
