Subject: Poachers!!

Was on the Winnipeg River this past week working on our cottage when I noticed a certain Lodges' boat speed trolling past our dock, Later I was on the dock when they came by, I asked them how the muskie fishing was and in a deep south dumba## drawl " We just caught a 40 incher Yuk, Yuk!! I proceeded to yell at him about the season is still closed, the fish are trying to spawn and you're a worthless poacher killing our fishing, then the standard answer of well we're fishing for pike, yeah right with a ten inch Jake dickh##d was my reply!! they never came back by and I realize this board follows the rules but I had to vent and don't be afraid of confronting poachers and turning them in. In ontario the # 1-800-222-tips, Thanks for letting me vent. Check all-aspect for all you former fighter pilots . Kugs

There,s nothing wrong with venting vs passive ignoring of illegal activities. My problem use to be, my venting along with a bad temper, led to more serious altercations. So, now that I am older, and wiser, I have learned that there is just too many idiots out there to show them the errors of their ways.If you vent ,do it safely, and call the law, when needed. If, I would have done that earlier, I wouldn,t now have such a hard time gripping my rod handle from numerous breaks in my right hand, that are now arthritic.

Jay is right. When you blow up and start cursing out ignorant people, the only one you are affecting is yourself. Make your point in an intelligent manner without rudeness. That might have an effect, but losing your temper at them will certainly not. My grandmother used to say, "Never fight with a pig. You only get covered in mud and the pig loves it."

Now, having said that.....I am the guy who threw a 10" Believer at a dumb*** who insisted on going between the shore and me while I was working a big muskie last year. I politely asked him to go around and he just looked at me like I was stupid or something. I should have known....he still had his tournament registration number taped to his motor. I got his attention and that of the other two people in his boat with that lure sailing past their heads as their boat went between me and the shore. I am never rude to others, and won't tolerate rudeness toward me.

The problem is that the brain still thinks that I'm 25 years old instead of 60. Me against 3 guys???? I don't think so. Pretty stupid, right?

Make your point to ignorant people in a polite and informative manner. You will have more effect. If not, call the MNR and report their boat registration numbers and location.

I love to fish for big northern and catch them regularly each year. Sometimes I use big lures, especially as toss backs. They work. Do I catch muskies while fishing for pike during muskie spawn? Yes. I appreciate catching them and try to release them while still in the water. Most of the females are not too interested in biting during the spawn. Oh, I am sure they could be enticed with some effort, but not normally. Small males, however, will bite. Fortunately, this time of year the water temps are cool and they don't fight extremely hard. So releasing them almost always results in no damage. I caution people about becoming "elitist" in their attitudes about muskie and pike fishing. I don't intend to give up pike fishing at the time when the big ones are most available, just to avoid the occasional catch of a spawning muskie.

So, just be careful out there. Use courtesy and education as your approach to people you see deliberately skirting the law. Don't threaten, curse or try to intimidate them. Besides being dangerous...it just doesn't accomplish what you want.

Bob, I dunno, I'd put money on a mad Marine who loves his muskies over three punks, no matter what the age differences! m

Two words for problem people: POTATO GUN ! ! !

Just kidding, but I do have a very good one that will shoot 100 yards if needed.

Bob, I have to be on these message boards for my fishing fix, however you should be landing big Pike right now.Where are the larger Pike hanging out this time of the year?I have never been up there this early. As far as rudeness comment, that has always been where all my problems use to happen with theses idiots.See you in 17 days at Greens.I am slowly reaching the, not being worth a crap at work, because all I can think about is MUSKIES.If I ever get fired at work, it is going to be the week before I leave Musky fishing, when I pretty much reach the totally worthless stage as far as an employee.I pretty much stand in one place in a daze covering in my mind each place at Sabaskong that I am going to fish.

First of all, Bob, 3 jerks against an American fighting man is no contest. We were the toughest, are the toughest, and will always be the toughest, I think. My kid might be able to kick my rear end, but he dont know what dad is capable of, and would probably let me win out of respect if he could. Secondly, I had a boat full of jerks "motor" between me and the shore last season. When I asked them what was wrong with their heads, they said "only A$$%les fish out of that side of the boat. Honestly, I think the only thing that saved those guys from a trip to the dentist courtesy of me, my father, and my 16 year old, 240# 6'-4'' son was the fact that I had very little juice left in the trolling batteries, from fighting the wind all day. I have pitched lures at kyakers that had cut in between us and the shore on a drift as well. It all boils down to courtesy on the water. I would NEVER cut off someone else's drift, no matter what species they were fishing for. if a pan fisherman is anchored, I always give him a very wide berth, and do not allow anyone to cast as we pass them at a minimum of 50 yards with the trolling motor. once well around the other side of them, we continue to fish. Treat all those on the water as you wish to be treated, unless they cheese you off, but ALWAYS respect the resource!

Ordinarily, I'd agree with you about moving in on someone working a spot, but I've had some experience canoeing / kayaking on big water against a wind, I absolutely understand them hugging a shoreline, even if someone's fishing it. "A minimun of 50 yards" isn't much with a trolling motor, but at the end of a long day with a paddle... For the next week, walk everywhere you normally take the car for those "short" trips to the store to pick up an item or two, and you'll have a sense of what you're asking them to do. If you think you "had very little juice left in the trolling batteries, from fighting the wind all day," consider how tired the kayaker must be. Now, if they started a water fight with each other right where I was casting, I might remove an ear or two. All I ask is that they pass through as smoothly / quietly as they can. I doubt they disturb the fish much anyway. I have often paddled up to touching distance on bass, weed walleyes, and, yes, muskies, in my crappy little Old Town Otter, and many of these guys are smoother / more skilled than I am.

Well I've have seen the same thing here on LOTW, I guide up here and came off the lake after a day of walleye fishing two days ago. There was this boat with muskie poles and muskie baits on all of them, I proceeded to ask the dock boy about these guys he said they had baoted 5 fish that day. He said they where targeting northern and winked, well to say the least my blood pressure was not good , knowing that fish are just (hopefully) finished spawning still irrateded me and that the season is more then a week away. I talked to the owner and he just shrugged he shoulders and said they where just targeting northern. So I hope these people are still here as I'm guiding guests from there again today. I will explain to them why the season is closed and proceed to right there boat numbers down and tell them they may get a visit from the MNR so they can explain it to them also, maybe they will get the point. Thanks

Miser, I understand your point, because I used to do much canoeing years ago. However, if I were to do something like that, I would certianly ask someone who was fishing to please excuse me, as opposed to pretending like they weren't even there, like the folks i came into contact with, untill they seen a Top Raider fired across thier bow as a warning shot.
