Posts: 149 | McAfee & Norton Anti-virus are two of the best. I don't know what AOL is offering though. It may be a special version for AOL.

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I need a little help too, I picked up a IE virus that irritating the hell out of me with Pop Up windows and resetting my home page. McAffey Avert was free, but it only scans for about 39 viruses. Edited by Gander Mt Guide 5/24/2004 3:37 PM

Posts: 13 Location: Stellendam, The Netherlands | If you can't change your homepage to the page you want, you need to download Pest Patrol. Go to www.pestpatrol.com and you will find a free download. You could also use ad-aware, you can download that one for free on www.download.com. Your computer is probably infected with spyware. McAfee is a good virus scanner, but I don't like their firewall. If you need a good and free firewall download Zone Alarm from www.download.com. Norton is a bit too "dominant" on your computer. I am using Norman and I like it a lot. There are some free virus scanners on the Net as well. But I have no experiences with them. Avast on www.avast.com seems to be good and is for free. All this software is legal. I haven't send you to any illegal download sites.

Posts: 226 Location: W. PA. | I've had Norton for 3 years and have never had a virus infect my computer. I leave the live update on and it updates your definitions automatically. I think it is about $40 for the program and $25 a year after that to keep it updated. I also run spybot and ad-aware about once a week to keep the spyware at bay. Scott

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | Bukes - 5/24/2004 9:45 PM Make sure you have any and all available critical updates from microsoft for your version of windows too! Yes, google on "windows updates" once a week or once a month and download the critical updates for windows. Just do it. I have Norton too and it is good. As mentioned it updates by its self and keeps you fresh. If you get the sasser worm (pretty current virus) you will know because it will log you off line. When you go online it will bump you right off. From this point you can't go online to get the fix. Do yourself a favor and search on norton's website for the sasser worm fix and download it (save it to your desktop or where ever. You can also copy it to a floppy disc. If you get the virus you can just run the fix and you are good to go. If you get it before you have the fix available you can go to a friends computer or the library computer and download the fix, save it to a disc and run it when you get home.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | Here are a couple free things I use: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&la... http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and for spy ware: http://www.earthlink.net/spyaudit/ This one will only tell you if you are running it but not remove it.. Symantec is Norton. The Mcafee stinger seems to scan for the most popluar viruses and it gets updated like once a week, so don't save it to your hard drive, rather just open it and run it. As far as real programs to buy, Norton works like a charm for me. I just use the other stuff as a backup but have never had anything found by them yet.

Listen to Remco. Here are two free software packages that will cure ALL of your computer problems in regard to virus' and spyware. 1. Go to download.com and get AdAware...make sure update it frequently as sometimes it won't do it on its own. You update this software by clicking on the icon that looks like the world. Run this software at least twice per week. 2. Go to this link and here you will find a free download for AVG virus package....it should update itself but here again make sure you check to see if it is updating. You update the software by clicking on the "update manager" tab. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php Run both of these, keep them updated, and don't download anything from music sites, tons of spyware and other nasty stuff...porn sites are bad too!! That's it, your machine will run great! RM

Posts: 18 Location: Madison Wisc | I have Norton 2004 on my pc and that coupled with AOL's free McAFree should cover most or all viruses. Just keep up the live updates to your software on your side. If you have your own virus protection, you do not need to get on-line all the time to AOL to do your scans. ![]()
