| Hello all, I have a few more rookie questions. First, I switched to 50lb braided spiderwire. I only bought 125 yards. I left a little 20lb mono on my reel for backing. Now my spool isn't even half full. I went fishing this morning and my casting distance was reduced. I had to work hard for distance (shoulders are killing). Was this because of the spool not having enough line, or does the braided line cause more friction and reduce distance. I thought about adding more mono for backing (like half spool) then adding the braided to fill the spool more.
I think I'm overkilling a spot. I was fishing the other day and was 2 hours into it and noticed I have moved only about 50-75 yards. I think I need to cover more water. How many different lures do you throw at a spot before you move? Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to learn and increase my chances.
I also lost a good lure today. It was my first lose. Blue Shallow Bomber. Came home and my cat vomitted on the carpet and my wife is bitching because I didn't clean it up before I left. How can I hook up my cat for bait? (kidding). What a morning, I should have went turkey hunting. |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | You don't have enough line on the reel, that will greatly reduce your casting distance. I would spool up half the reel with the mono then the superline. Unless you are trolling that should be more than enough superline. I would try covering more water too and hit the same spots at different times of the day and when there is a weather change. |

Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | You may want to go to a heavier test line, like 65 - 80 lb. PowerPro. I experienced too many line breaks when getting a backlash on a cast with heavy baits when using 50 lb. I haven't had a line break in 3 years with the 65 lb. test. You will find that you will get fewer backlashes when you get your reel filled with line. You have to cast too hard when the spool is low. You have plenty of braided line on the reel, just add more backing. Don't go heavier than the 20 lb. test mono for backing. |
