Hi, In response to your page entitled "WRMA Photo Analysis In Question", as director of Visual Geometry Solutions, I would appreciate the opportunity to reply to a few of the questions posed. 1) We do exist, and are a registered company in the United Kingdom; you can confirm this at Companies House. The article to which you refer was indeed incorrect in specifying that we are a 'Department of Oxford University' and I informed the author (Scott Heiberger, [email protected]) of the mistake on March 15. I was informed that a correction would be made, although I did not confirm that this correction was indeed published. 2) In response to other specific queries posted on your page: Q: With whom has the contract been established and what are the names of the principle researchers and their qualification? A: The work is being performed by Dr Fred Schaffalitzky, but I am also following the work closely. 'Qualifications' are available on our web-site. Q: How much is the analysis costing? A: This information is not for me to release. Q: When will the analysis be completed? A: For the delay, we take full responsibility. We did indeed inform the WRMA that we would be working on the problem during the week of 20 March. However the work turned out to be harder than originally expected (due to a number of unknowns regarding the images available which we are currently following up on). We believe that accuracy is more important than speed and decided to put forward the deadline in order to ensure a more thorough job. Q: Why wasn't an American Institution like Harvard, ITT or MIT awarded the contract rather than out-sourcing it offshore? (All of these institutions have departments that do this kind of work.) A: The Visual Geometry Group at Oxford University is generally regarded as one of the top research groups in this field in the world. It is not up to me to say why we have been chosen over an "American Institution", although being from a non-Musky-fishing nation I would hope to be accepted as rather unbiased on this particular issue. I trust that this answers some of your queries, but should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I would very much appreciate it if you would make the relevant changes to your site as you should now be convinced that they are incorrect and misleading. Yours, Geoff Cross Director Visual Geometry Solutions. A Few Words from Jerry Newman For those interested: I Hope this finds everyone well and ready to hit the water again. A few things to keep in mind as we start the season: Although I'll be stepping back from active participation in the WRMA, I want those interested to be assured that Rich Delaney and the rest of the active WRMA membership will continue to execute the original game plan as previously outlined. Many thanks go out to all those who have helped and supported the WRMA to date. We hope that our rapidly growing membership will continue to attract the best and brightest of the musky hunting community to our cause, and we are confident that as our work progresses, more still will continue to join and participate. Special thanks go out to both Reid Frank and Larry Ramsell for their excellent work "pounding out" the required parameters for VGS. Together they were able to establish realistic, fair and acceptable standards of measure for VGS to continue their study with. It's incredible to me how much detail and work went into just this one area of the authentication process. It was a real struggle just to assemble the hard data to begin with, and it seemed everything took longer than expected. Early on both Larry and Reid insisted on accuracy over speed, or any deadline. I tip my hat for all their effort and hard work! Lots of work has been completed to date, much more to follow, however, as a wise man once said, "you eat an elephant one bite at a time". In my heart of hearts I’m sure he’d approve of the painstaking approach the WRMA has followed thus far. The fact that the WRMA has already begun to heal much of the bitterness over these records is nothing short of fantastic. I can see no reason for this trend not to continue, and I applaud the willingness of those who have made promises to accept the WRMA findings- either way - and finally end the "in house fighting" that has plagued our sport for years. I'll close with a point that I feel needs clarifying. A few have voiced their concern that our only function is to oust one of the records. Indeed, if true this would represent a sad state of affairs. At this time I would like to reiterate that the World Record Musky Alliance (WRMA) was formed as a non-profit group in an attempt to authenticate the brass ring of our sport. Our endeavor is now and will continue to be to retain highly qualified, impartial sources to analyze and verify, where possible, all evidence related to these record catches. This will include both research into the circumstances surrounding the catches and professional evaluation of available photos. If and only if our conclusions give rise to evidence different than the accepted current records will these findings be submitted to the IGFA and/or NFWFHF for their review and possibly modification of the records in the same manner as was done by research in the early 90’s. Our hope is that this effort will provide more consensuses in the recognized records, and either way the long running record debate will be reasonable resolved. Thank you, Jerry Newman | ||
