Okay ... rigging my new boat and I was curious if someone could help point me in the direction of the best rod holders out there.

I'm looking for something that would be rail mounted. I don't troll for 'skis often but when I do, I want something strong enough to take a massive strike. These would also be used to hold an occassional sucker rod and maybe trout or salmon fishing on Lake Superior.

I've heard good things about the down east holders. Anyone have any input?

Thanks,

definately down easters, I put rails on my boat and got teh rail mount ones.

They are so easy to get out of the holder, especially if you are trolling and get a fish and there is a lot of pressure on the rod. The reel just pops out, the other types have you fighting with the long rod butt getting the rod out, these are the slickest I have even used.

I'd say Down easters, too. But I have Scotty's with the flush mounts. They are plebty strong, but they will tend to pop up and back with big, hard pulling baits.

One thing with the Down Easter. Do not use cork handled rods while trolling. The corks gets chewed up. Cork handled rods are ok for soaking suckers, though.

Looking at the website (www.down-east.com), the Salty series would be more appropriate for musky fishing versus the standard series. Is that what you'd recommend?

Also, how easy are they to take on and off?

Mike

Mike, these are the ones I got.

They are very easy to take on and off, the clamp stays on the rail, but a bolt and a wingnut connect the holder to the rail clamp.
I take mine on and off all the time, especially when putting my cover on.

(p.s., careful taking on/off while on the water, or else your wingnut will end up in the drink..hmm, wonder who did that........short/student/iowa??????????)

I use and recommend the RAM Rod Holders. These are strong, adjustabe and very simple to use. These can be bought through the web at Walleyes Inc.
