Found this site from someone on the Go Fishing Ohio site.I'm from the cincy area, just a little east,by Eastfork Lake.I'm mostly a bass and cat fisherman,i've always wanted to catch muskie and this year i'm settin to do it.What i need help with is tackle.I've had people tell me they catch muskie while bass fishing and i really don't need to invest in secial lures or new poles. Two of my poles are bass pro shops 6'6' im8 and im9 med.heavy graphites with spinning reels. Will these work if i use 20# trilene with steel leaders? Also my wife loves to fish as much as i do but can't get here away from using closed face feels. She has one pole, heavy with a 733 hawg spoolled with 20# trilene. Will this work? Were heading to cave run the first of may.I would be grateful for any help. This looks like a great site and i'm glad to be here. Thanks

In my opinion, your set- ups are too light. Go heavy on the line and the reel. Perhaps an AbuGarcia C3 with 80# super line and a leader. There are two things that you want to avoid. 1. Break offs with baits left in the muskie's mouth leading to its death. 2. Because of a light set-up, needing to fight the fish so long, that the exhausted fish dies when released. Good luck. Catch some big ones!

I'm in agreement about the tackle being a bit too light. You can probably get by with casting smaller sized muskie lures with those outfits, but when you work so hard to get just one or two fish to eat, don't be caught without the gear to be at an advantage over the fish in the fight! My suggestion would be to keep an eye on the items for sale on the buy, sell, trade board. There's always gear on there for a good price that will get you rolling.

Sounds like i need new tackle.Looking at the bass pro catalog at the abu garcia c3 with the bionic im-8 combo. What does the action code for the rod,MT,MHT .I figure it's medium heavy something.I'm a spinning reel guy,but remember the back lash problems. How's this reel stack up for casting. There's three reels, the 4600C3,5500C3,6500C3.Which one would be the right one.The pole has concept alum oxide guides,is that what i need for braided lines. How much better is the C4 reel and the pole with fuji hardloy guides.

Welcome to a great and addicting sport.
I agree with Lunker and Slamr's suggestions on your tackle set ups. The one thing I would suggest that many first timers forget about is a net, a BIG net. It will be your greatest aid in handling these fish when you get one. I Know too well what it is like to be attached to a green 46" by the hooks. I use mine as a livewell over the side of the boat only lifting the fish briefly for a picture. You may have a net from catfishing that will work. Good luck

You are not far from several good muskie waters, including Cave Run Lake and Green River Lake in Kentucky, Cowan and Ceasars Creek lakes in Ohio. Check out ODNR's website, they have a muskie page. What tackle do you use for big catfish? these might work for muskie. I got a 33" muskie at Cave Run a couple weeks ago using a 6'6" Ugly Stick Lite spinning rod 60 pound test braid and a Penn spin reel, throwing a half oz. rattletrap. I was lucky to get a good hookup, you'll need a rod with some backbone to get a good hookset, so watch the limber tips on the heavier bass stuff. Tell the GFO boyz that Mikie says hi. m

If you are going to go with the baitcaster and aren't really going to be beefing up to the monster muskie tackle you see in a lot of catalogs and the such, I would go with a 5500C3. The reel is a little bit smaller in the hands, has a thinner diameter spool, and seems to fit better for some smaller baits, but will do the larger baits when needed. Hope this helps.

Before I really got into muskie fishing I was fishing with a Bass Pro IM 8 and actually caught a 43 incher and thought that the rod was going to break, it was one of the funnest (i know not a word) fish that i have ever caught. I would say that if you are going to throw just light stuff you will be fine but will also not catch as many fish. Once you start to throw andything over 1 oz. you will end up killing yourself and your rod, I know from experience. You are not going to have as good hook setting power with a lighter rod either which is something to think aobut. Another thing is that if you are throwing bass lures make sure to use mono because it will stretch and give which will help out because the bass lures will be torn apart after one fish where braided line could pull the lure apart or at least the pull the hooks straight. anyway those are my thoughts

keep fishing hard

Thanks everyone.I will ask a lot of questions like how does braided line affect spinning reels. Most spinning reels have alum spools, does braided line chew the spools. Also ,which of the guides i mentioned above do you want. Also on the IM8 poles,i'm thinking of going with the BPS combo,5500 or 6500 and 7ft pole. Will that work. With the pole discription it has an MHT,what does it stand for.

Stampede. I would go with a 7 1/2 foot medium heavy Gander Mtn Guige series caster or a Pete Mania same lengh and weigt from Bps or a St Croix. If you going to use body baits mainly go with the C3 if your going to use more buck tails or spinner baits i would use the C4. My two cents. Bob
