For those of you who are avid Shield Hunters, what main strategy do you stick with in late summer time (August, early Sept.)?

Hey there, I guide on Lac Seul (Ontario) and in July and August the best things are big bucktails (bulging the surface) and big, loud topwater baits. By burnin bucktails and firing topwaters will allow you to cover lots of water. Look for nice green cabbage weeds. Work both the shallow and deep cabbage. Hopefully this will put you onto a couple of pigs.

Good Luck,

work the area establish a pattern and go nuts. rock piles and points are key. deep saddles hold large fish at that time. trolling can work well. troll to your casting areas..........good luck.....crippler

My strategy is to join the great group of guys at Sabaskong Bay Lodge for the outing in August, and get on a pattern quickly.

While I didn't personally do well last year, I did put Kly and Matt on some good fish. My tip is whatever bait you are throwing, put it tight to the structure. If your bait lands 3' out, you are not going to see as many fish. Put that lure right where structure meets water, and you will see fish.

hi shep. new to the website but love muskie fishing. i have some experience on sabaskong, but mostly the southern end of whitefish bay. any advice for that portion of the lake? have fished several of the spots marked on the pin board from last years outing. burrows bay lost 45 incher at boat. raised 50 inch plus on island you guys had follows on twice. any advice on baits for late july on sabaskong? turtle portage is the way we access sabaskong, but is such a pain. would it be quicker to come from nestor falls from meline's resort? thanks for any help.

Sounds like you got a good thing going already, just need to spend more time. I like top waters, Suicks and Reef Hawgs on Sab Bay. Cranking deep structure will also produce.

I think the water should be up some this year, and I've heard that the portage will be easier. I think JoMusky and GregM can better give info on the ride from Nestor.

I've done that Nestor Falls -Burrow many times, but not in a few yrs..I bet the entrance was tough last year w/ low water.Ouch!I did it last in a Lund w/ 75 tiller and it took a good 1/2 hour -45 min. if I remember right. Tough going by all that primo water to fish up there. Although , the biggest fish I've ever seen on the Woods was on the backside of Rabbit.BIIIIIIIIG fishie. If I get up to the Woods this year w/ M1st I'd love to see her again!Long and a veeeery big tail.Did I mention really deeep too. I'll never forget that fish as long as I live.If you catch her give her a kiss for me and put her back.Please.She followed a black /orange Windels Muskie Hunter(chop jerkbait w/willow spinner blade bent over the face)my rock smasher.Oh, the memories. Went back next day w/ misty rain and wind crashing into the rocks ( my fav conditions up there)and didn't see anything. One day. Steve

I'll try again, must have hit the wrong button.

A lot depends on what lake or lake type you will be fishing. Much of the dark water areas on the LOTWs forinstance will have an algae bloom, and the key to catching fish will be to find clean water. Many other dark water shield lakes won't have this problem. Trout water on the other hand will be at prime casting time and many techiniques will work. On some lakes weeds will be dieing and dirty, and in other lakes the weeds will be prime.

Even then every year will be somewhat different regardless what type of lake you are fishing.

Lots of vairables, but that's what makes it interesting.
