Some guys have a lucky hat, shirt, lure, or some other superstition when it comes to musky fishing. You know... that one thing that always seems to be a part of many of your fish photos. I'm not a believer is superstitions, so I'm willing to bet most of those things put fish in the boat for two reasons.... LUCK and the "self fulfilling prophecy". Superstitions can be fun and add some flavor to any fishing trip, but they are not something I want to rely on to put fish in the boat.

With that said, I'm beginning to wonder if there is such a thing as a Perfect Partner. You know, that one person that you always seem to catch fish with no matter what the conditions. Is this just a coincidence or this there someting to be learned from what some people refer to as Karma or Mojo or...... whatever. Is it possible that teamwork can put more fish in the boat each season? I fish with many different people each season (many very good sticks too), and I can tell that with some partners we are just out having fun and kinda just "going through the motions". The results are usually a good time but few fish photos. Then, there are some guys that just seem to help you put your "game face" on and the results are usually a good time due to many fish photos. Big difference in my opinion.

Do you have a Perfect Partner and if so, why do you think you are so successful with that person?

That's an interesting question. What do you make of this- my wife doesn't fish and she puts more fish in the boat for me than anyone else and also when I'm solo. It's freaky. I even call her "the mojo" now. Good "net-woman". Great photographer. Somehow calls them in. There's a lot to be said about fishing and LUCK.

It's definately not JimK!! LOL!! We have had a terrible jinx when we fish together. We move lot's of fish and have had some hook-ups but none in the boat. When I have fished with my buddy Chris we rarely get skunked.

I have a couple partners I seem to do well with. It goes deeper than the day or conditions, because we almost ALWAYS are on the fish. Intensity, discussion about techniques applied for the day, areas fished, and the willingness to do something radical if things are tough are part of the deal. Sharing boat control and allowing for a break when it makes sense, keeping things real and having a good time, and always always looking for the key on any given day. Some days we find that key, others not, but averages are very good. Beav and Slamr seem to stick fish regularly in my rig. Keith and I regluarly catch BIG fish together, and I'm pretty sure all the above are the reasons why. Sue is the perfect partner also even though she is learning right now. She is not afraid to suggest another approach or break the mold a bit.

Well said Steve!

I think many people today just read their Musky Hunter magazine and then "go through the motions" when on the water with friends and family. That will put a few fish in the boat, but not consistently.

Dick Pearson has spoken about "intelligent musky fishing" at some of his seminars and I honestly feel that is the "secret" to success. I'm beginning to realize that a partner who helps you fish more intelligently increases your versatility and results. Then again, some friends are simply entertaining to fish with (heh heh) and its more about the experience than the results. Both perfect partners I suppose......

I hear the whole wife thing! Out in the boat with me twice last year, and I boated two fish on each occasion. The first was 1 day before our wedding anniversary. 42" and a 48"! Now, how do i get her in the boat more often!?!

Then there are the people that no matter how much we fish together the gods frown down upon us. You guys know who you are!

I don't get to fish with my younger brother very often, but when we get together, we move fish. I think it s because we talk stratagy before we go out and change on the fly when things don't work out. We also are open to each others suggestions. Or it's the older brother who doesn't want to be shown up by his younger brother and the younger brother who wants to show his bigger brother that he's better. But.. I think it's just luck.( I booked 3 outings with him this year, so I should know by mid-november)

Here is my theory on the wife thing.....It's like hanging doe scent in the brush below your treestand when bowhunting. you generally bring a little bottle of the stuff, not the real thing.
