C3 is probably the most popular of them all, the color depends mainly on the year. I have a C3 and im in the process of getting a 7000HSN, a new model put out which has the same size spool but a narrower width.

btw, the reel is on the way!

I use the Big Game and C3.

7000CL Big Game: Black w/ 5.3:1 gears (although Reed's had some at the show yesterday that were gold)

7000 C3: Silver w/ 4.1:1 gears

There's a cheaper one that just came out w/ bushings instead of bearings. If memory serves me correctly, it's called the 7000B and it's green. I think it goes about $120, but I'd stay away from it. I think Thorne's lists it as a 'trolling reel'. I'd recommend either the Big Game or C3, or the 7000HSN if you like the narrow spool. The way I see it, you are buying a reel built to last at least a decade of heavy use, you might as well splurge and get one w/ bearings.

Geez, I think this my third Abu 7000 post in the past week. Think I like 'em?

the 8 foot st croix and a 7000 is my bucktail rod. its the best bucktail rod ive ever had my paws on, hands down. if you want to throw bucktails this is the ultimate combo...any 8 foot bucktail rod will do, im just particularly fond of st croix's...its one impressive combo. you wouldnt be disappointed.

I have a 7000C3 on a 8ft Fig Rig and it is very close to the perfect bucktail setup. My next reel will be the 7000HSN. I would like to have the higher speed gears to burn with. I wouldn't be afraid of the 7000B and the bushings, my Dad has a 5000D bushing reel that has been beat around for 25 years, outlasting all of the bearing reels we have.

Cabelas has the C3 7000 for $100.00 right now. Is that a decent price?

How much backing line do you add to a 7000 before adding a super line???? I have 3 that I bought over the winter and "got the itch" and have been getting my stuff ready for the coming season and would like to put line on them. I would like to put 100 yards of 80 lb Tufline on them, just need to know how full of some other line theyneed to be.

it's definetly not an exact science, but i like mine to be full the the brim with the line i use. i use 80# or 100# tuff line. I'd fill the spool more than you want initially, its easier to take a little backing off than put more on. just put on a good amount of mono so the spool diameter with backing is about an inch or so, then tie a blood knot to the tuff line and spool it up. if you want more line, just pull all the line out in the yard or some spot, then cut off some backing and re-tie the bloodknot. with casting, having exactly some amount of line isn't life or death, just want to have more than enough is all, 100 yards is plenty. the spools are 150 yards or 300 yards. so just fill it up full, can't get two reels out of a 150, maybe could get 3 out of a 300, but you'd have to be pretty stingy. : )

let me know if you have any other questions. i just might respool mine too, it got me thinkin about line again.

Tom,
If you have three of them, just put the 100 yds of superline on first, attach the backing and fill it up, then just spool it onto one of the other reels. Repeat process with the second/third reels. By then you should have an idea of how much backing goes on the third reel w/o having to reel it from another one...

I use the 5.3:1 Big Game for bucktails. You might think that high ratio makes bucktails hard to retrieve, but 7000's are just so big it doesn't matter. I can cast all day and I can retrieve so fast that I have to add weight to all my bucktails to keep them in the water.

We have the 4.1:1 7000 at Gander, .....$95.00. Does anybody use this one, or is the 5:1 the reel to use?

I have the 4.1:1 and love it. The extra large spool makes up for the ratio. I think that is a very good price too.
