| I woke up this morning to the sound of rain. I didn't relish the thought of sitting in a treestand, getting wet, waiting for non-existent deer.
I let my son sleep in for a while, then rousted his sorry butt out of bed and asked him, "Wanna go muskie fishin?"
He crawled out of bed, stuffed some breakfast and we hooked up the boat. A quick stop at the bait shop for 4 suckers and we were soon on the lake, the only ones there.
Within the first hour, we had a follow, a strike and lo and behold, a muskie took a sucker. Telling my son to grab the rod and set the hook, he was soon into a muskie, only to have it tear off! The poor kid is 19 and still hadn't landed his first muskie.
I was laughing at him when his sucker was hit again. I told him to let the fish take it just a little longer. This time, when he set the hook, the fish didn't come off and we soon had Jim's first muskie in the boat!!! It was a chunky 33 incher and a more beautiful muskie I've never seen!
We continued to fish in the cold rain, Jim managed to get his first muskie on a lure as well, his first legal.
We managed to last 4 hours before getting soaked, totally chilled and loved every minute of it.
When all was said and done, we'd landed 6 muskies, Jim 4, me 2. Three of Jim's muskies came on suckers, 1 one a twitched Jake bait.
Both of my muskies came on twitched Bomber Long A's, one in bass color, one in firetiger.
Interesting to note was the fact that the water temp was 37.8 degrees, yet all muskies were caught in less than 8 feet of water.
We should have had even more fish boated. Jim lost 3 more muskies on suckers, 2 on lures, while I missed 3 on lures, one a BIG fish that hit on a figure 8.
So, while it was cold, nasty and miserable, we laughed, caught fish and had the time of our lives. Unless I can get a day free in the next week, I'll have to live with 144 muskies boated for the season.
Just thought I'd like to share this with my friends.
