My dad who will be 70 and I are going on another trip to Eagle Lake to argue and fish. For years I have tried teaching him to use a bait caster but he insists on using spinning reels. However we may have a third person that does not fish much. I am looking to get a St. Croix Slingshot 2 and the Svivlo Genesis reel to have as a backup for my dad incase the other guy needs to use my dad’s spinning outfit to fish for “musky” or whatever bites. Videos of the reel not tangling look promising. My dad likes to fish Silver Minnows and spoons and has done ok up there in the past.
Has anyone used either the rod or the reel that can give an opinion? I would love to get another TFO bigfish rod but they are discontinued.

St. Croix musky rods speak for themselves. I don't own any Legend tournament rods but I have 6 different Premier models in my rotation. Great rods, no complaints. I'm sure others will comment on the Legend tournaments. As far as the reel goes, new model this year. You might have to wait awhile for reviews. But if you pull the trigger on the reel, I, as well as others would be interested in what you think about it.

FWIW, my favorite downsizer rod is a Dobyns 796 paired with a Daiwa Tatula 300. If he's doing proper figure 8's though, a 9'H rod is the way to go. Also, I ran one Legend Tournament with the grasp handle last season, and it wasn't too popular.

I have the sling blade and the Big Dawg from years ago when they first came out and still had the lifetime warranty and an old Avid that I have used for jerk baits since 2001. I was originally going to get it for Father’s Day but with my dad’s aversion to bait casters I am going to keep the reel and a rod for a spare incase my brother in laws or nephews want to go musky fishing. I have heard good things about the Dobyns I will see if anywhere local has one to check out. Thanks.
